Context / The University of Lincoln’s National Centre for Food Manufacturing supports the skills development of some 1500 food industry employees each year on a range of Apprenticeships, adult skills courses and Higher Education programmes.Our customers include many leading UK and global businesses for example Bakkavor, Premier Foods, the Produce World Group, MoyPark, QV Foods, Kerry Foods, Fountain Foods, Empire World Trade, Waitrose and Morrisons amongst others and we work in partnership with many international partners and universities.
The University’s facilities at Holbeach are some of the best of their kind in the UK. NCFM is reputed for its partnership with employers and machinery manufacturers. Employers have been pivotal in shaping the centre and its curriculum. Our food factory training facility was initiated and designed by employers and their equipment supplier partners. Now over 25 suppliers championed by PPMA (The Processing and Packaging Machinery Manufacturers Association) including Ishida, Marel, Festo, Ritall, Domino, ABB Robotics, BOC, Sharpak, Mecopack, GE Intelligent Platforms and others collaborate to bring the latest innovation to employers and students
As the majority of our students are employed in the industry in various capacities and our curriculum is championed by employer, the post holder will require excellent industry knowledge as well as sound academic credentials. We need a key individual with the skills, knowledge and passion for technology and experience in a Factory/Production Manager’srole to inspire our students and help them developthe knowledge, skills and confidence they require to embrace technology and help their businesses advance their manufacturing capability.
Ideally you will have teaching experience but we are keen to hear from industry professionals who may not be experienced teachers but are keen to pursue a career in teaching. The key requirements are an understanding of factory operations and a passion for technology and inspiring others to learn.
A member of the Apprenticeship and Skills team, the role is focussed on the delivery of underpinning knowledge for the University’s Apprenticeship provision, professional short courses and Foundation Degree students.We are also committed to working with young people to enthuse and inform them about career opportunities in the sector so supporting the engagement of young people and teachersis a feature of this role.
Note: This post is not suitable for individuals seeking to work in Higher Education and pursue a research based academic career. It is a Further Education post concerned with advancing specific vocational skills in Factory and Process Operations at all levels in partnership with employers.
Job Purpose / To work under the direction of the Head of Skills and Employer Engagement to deliver learning and teaching and undertaking course leadership and development. This post will be part of a team delivering vocational education to part time students employed in the food industry. Although primarily focused on the delivery of Further Education to include Apprenticeship, National Diploma/equivalent level courses and short courses the post holder may also be required to teach on Higher Education programmes, notably at Foundation Degree level. The post holder will require strong skills in factory operations and food processing and will play a key role in the development of this curriculum area working closely with employers in support of course developments and student progress.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching and Learning Support- To be responsible for teaching and assessing both the practical and theoretical components of courses including relevant Functional Skills.
- To have responsibility for supporting students individually or collectively in their studies through tutorials and subject support sessions.
- Undertake course coordination and leadership duties for identified courses.
- The delivery of provision on employers’ premises and providing support for students in the workplace where required
- Support the recruitment process, providing initial advice and guidance to students and their employers, hosting open days and other promotional events.
- Undertake initial assessment and develop learning plans with students and the provision of tutorial support and an appropriate level of pastoral care.
- Undertake teaching or theoretical and practical in a range of environments, which may include classroom, practical units, employers’ premises and a laboratory environment, where appropriate.
- Contributing to the smooth running and development of the physical resource base supporting the subject area i.e. labs and the food factory
Liaison and Development
The role requires the post holder to liaise closely with colleagues within NCFM to ensure the smooth running of provision and on occasions, with colleagues from other departments and faculties i.e. in support of shared resources. Liaison with employers is a strong feature of the role and the post holder will maintain employer relationships and associated professional networks in support of students and individual self-development. The post also involves some liaison with schools.
- Liaise and network effectively with colleagues, schools and others to enhance service standards, support for students and promote provision and the University.
- Build productive relationships with employers in order to provide new opportunities for business and enhance the experience of employees on programmes and employer satisfaction
- Build productive relationships with employers in order to enhance NCFM’s standing in this and aid the development of own curriculum area and other areas/disciplines as appropriate
- Liaise closely with the campus’s HE team to ensure that skills based provision is aligned to the HE offer in order to present a cohesive offer to employers and support progression opportunities for Apprentices and FE learners
- Undertake course and curriculum development (in partnership with employers and schools as required)
- Develop own skills through staff development in order to enhance the course offer of the
- Assist in the development of appropriate commercial work i.e. trials and consultancy
- Assist in developing and publicising the work and image of Holbeach Campus, the Faculty and the University attending careers events and open days .
General
- Undertake such administrative duties required by to satisfy the management needs of the campus, faculty, University, the SFA and HE funding councils.

- To confirm the understanding of Apprentices/Students during reviews of the responsibilities of employers and their own personal responsibility with respect to Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity and other legislative requirements.
- Participate in appropriate staff review methods and in-service training based on an assessment of individual and business needs.
- Carry out such other duties as may be appropriate to the post and the work of the University.
In addition, undertake such duties as may reasonably be requested and that are commensurate with the nature and grade of the post.
