Hours of work / Support staff
The normal full-time hours of work for support staff are 35 hours per week. The precise times of work are by arrangement within the School.

Academic and Professional & Managerial staff
Academic and Professional and Managerial staff are required to devote the whole of their time to the duties of the post and your hours of work will be laid down by your Head of School.
Payment of salary / Your salary will normally be paid in 12 equal payments into your bank account or building society. When you’re paid will depend on which type of staff you are, and the month you will start to receive your pay will depend on your start date and our payroll deadlines.

  • Academic, professor & managerial and clerical staff are paid on the last working day of each month in respect of that calendar month.
  • Technical staff are paid mid-monthly on the last working day before the 17th of each month in respect of that calendar month.
  • Operational staff are paid mid-monthly on the last working day before the 17th of each month in respect of the previous month.

Annual leave / The leave year for all types of staff runs from 1st October to the following 30th September. The leave entitlement for all full-time staff is made up of statutory days, additional days when the University is closed by custom and five working weeks (25 working days – pro rata for part-time staff and staff contracted to work less than 52 weeks per year).
The dates for annual leave need to be agreed in advance with the Head of School or nominee, and requested via the HR Self Service system.

Support staff

Sickness absence / All members of staff should notify their Department on the first day of their absence if they are ill and unable to come to work. The staff member should inform the Department of the nature of their illness and when they expect to return to work. If the absence is expected to exceed 3 working days a self-certificate sickness form will need completing and returning to the staff member’s line manager.
If you are ill for more than seven days you will need to send your manager a sick note from your doctor.

Flexible working / Flexible working is the variation of working hours, times, patterns or location to help fit your time around your personal commitments. In order to make a request for flexible working an employee must have worked for the University for six months and not have made an application to work flexible hours within the last year.
If you’d like to work flexible hours you should talk with your Head of School/Service about it. You should also fill in the 'flexible working request' form. For further information please see:
Pensions / There are two main pension schemes offered to staff: the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS) and the University of Leeds Pension and Assurance Scheme (PAS). Your contract of employment will confirm which pension scheme you can join.
