University of Central Missouri (UCM) – Undergraduate Certificates

The Crisis and Disaster Management program at the University of Central Missouri created three standalone online Undergraduate Certificates in 2013. Areas of study include:

  • Emergency Management
  • Environmental Hazards
  • Business Continuity
  • Emergency Services Management

Each certificate requires completion of four courses (12 hours of credit). Credits earned by completing an undergraduate certificate can be applied towards the B.S. degree in Crisis and Disaster Management (see our listing under Bachelor degrees). Additional information is available at

Undergraduate Certificate in Emergency Management

This concise, coherent field of study provides a background to those wishing to enter the public safety and public administration profession. Students pursuing majors in criminal justice, political science, and occupational safety will find this certificate complements their field of study. These courses also add new skills for mid-career emergency responders and managers in public safety, public management, risk management, and health and safety.

The Certificate in Emergency Management also prepares qualified students to pursue the Certified Emergency Manager professional credential, offered by the International Association of Emergency Managers, or the state-level emergency manager certifications offered by many states in the region.

Undergraduate Certificate in Environmental Hazards

This concise, coherent field of study provides a background for those wishing to enter the field of environmental management. Students pursuing majors in biology, chemistry, occupational safety, or technology will find this certificate complements their field of study. These courses also add new skills for mid-career managers in hazardous waste management, emergency services, environmental management, risk management, and health and safety.

The Certificate in Environmental Hazards also prepares qualified students to pursue the Certified Hazardous Materials Manager professional credential, offered by the Academy of Certified Hazardous Materials Managers.

Undergraduate Certificate in Business Continuity

This concise, coherent field of study provides a background for those wishing to enter the business continuity profession. Students pursuing majors in business, information technology, or any field of management will find this certificate complements their field of study. These courses also add new skills for mid-career managers in information technology, manufacturing, logistics, risk management, and health and safety.

The Certificate in Business Continuity also prepares qualified students to pursue the Certified Business Continuity Planner professional credential, offered by Disaster Recovery Institute, International.

Undergraduate Certificate in Emergency Services Management

This concise, coherent field of study provides a background for those wishing to advance into management positions in the emergency services. Students pursuing majors/minors in fire science, criminal justice, occupational safety, management, or political science will find this certificate complements their field of study.

The Certificate in Emergency Services Management also can be used to meet continuing professional development requirements for some state-level certifications and licenses. These courses also add new skills for mid-career managers in public safety, fire departments, emergency medical services, and emergency communications organizations.

The Crisis and Disaster Management degree program is located in the Institute for Rural Emergency Management (IREM), in the Harmon College of Business and Professional Studies. IREM is active in public service, training, and emergency responder safety. Students are encouraged to participate in IREM projects.
