DESCRIPTION*:

This module will equip students with problem- solving, analytical and investigative skills necessary to successfully work independently and with others to identify, design and critically evaluate evidence-based ethical and creative solutions to problems within their subject area.

  • To develop an awareness of how to identify problems, select and justify approaches from a range of predefined and self generated solutions
  • To explore relevant real world issues that impact on the chosen subject area and identify aspects that could be improved

INDICATIVE CONTENT:

Students will build on the knowledge gained during the module Investigations into your Subject Area 1 and 2.

Students will be introduced to idea development and problem solving through a series of real world issues and scenaros being set around work-based social or environmental problems.

Students will be introduced to the following learning activities:

  • Team based learning
  • Working within an ‘innovation unit’
  • Projects which focus upon student generated content
  • Reflection upon the work of others and how their subject ideas and personal perspectives have evolved
  • How current and historic contexts inform the evaluation of ideas
  • The purpose of research in idea development
  • Methods for developing and sustaining ideas

JUSTIFICATION OF TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGY*:

This module will comprise two sessions per week for 24 weeks. The sessions may include a range of delivery methods such as: team based learning, lectures, tutorials, discussions, laboratory or studio classes, practical sessions, case studies, student presentations, performances or debates.

CONTEXT*

The module may include students registered on a range of programmes within the Foundation Framework. The module will be delivered to three cognate areas of study. These are: 1. Art, Design and Media 2. Health and Science 3. Business/Education/Social Sciences.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA

These modules use the level four University modular framework grading criteria.

A common theme looking into a real world issue will be set across all subject areas.

Portfolio:

Students will be required to work in interdisciplinary teams within a simulated work environment set up as an ‘innovation unit’ to explore the issue.

Following an introduction to the project and a workshop from the Changemaker Hub team, students will conduct a series of investigations and explorations of ideas around the theme, these will be recorded and submitted as part of portfolio and will reflect the subject specialismfor example outcomes could be notebooks/sketchbooks, film/interviews/drawings/

art and design work/short texts (500 words)/photographs/

research journal, reports)

All portfolios will include a business canvas, a communication log and a personal reflection on the learning experience.
