Position Description: Director of Faith Formation

Mission:
The mission of the Director of Faith Formation is to develop, implement and oversee a creative program of education, relational ministry, and activities designed to bring faith out of the sanctuary and into everyday life, and to empower and equip people of all ages to do ministry according to their baptismal calling. The Director will also support ULCSC to serve God through the spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the message of God’s abundant grace.
Responsibilities:
- Develop relationships with people of all ages to more fully integrate them into the life and ministry of the Church;
- Develop both intergenerational and age-specific activities;
- This is to include youth groups for specific ages as well as:
- Groups for other ages, including young adults (post-college), 30-40’s, and seniors.
- Recruiting and equipping lay leadership for each group;
- Mentoring and being a resource person for the lay leadership.
- Encourage faith practices in the home via education, emails, website, or publications;
- Further develop, implement and oversee a creative program of education to assist individuals of all ages to discover and deepen their relationship with Jesus Christ;
- Develop a program of teacher recruitment, training and appreciation;
- Work closely with the Sunday School Superintendent(s) to ensure that the Sunday education ministry runs efficiently;
- Assist with Confirmation or Adult Education instruction as requested by the Pastor;
- Serve as a resource for special events or projects for youth offered by area churches, the Arkansas-Oklahoma Synod, and the ELCA, both regionally and nationally;
- Serve as a resource for the Sunday Children’s Message as requested by the Pastor;
- Recruit and/or work with the Acolyte director to encourage, train, and schedule acolytes of all ages for both Sunday liturgies, as well as special liturgies as needed;
- Attend meetings of the Education Committee and the Congregational Council;
- Prepare monthly reports to the Education Committee and the Congregational Council that include data on participation at all events and an evaluation of the outcomes of the events.
- Attend synod and conference youth ministry meetings;
- Participate in the Norman Network of Youth Ministers
- Participate in the Norman Ministerial Fellowship
- Prepare a report for the annual congregational meeting that includes but is not limited to participation data and accomplishments of the education program of the previous year and planning and goals for the upcoming year;
- Prepare a column for the monthly congregational newsletter;
- In the Pastor’s absence, function as the senior staff person; and
- Carry out other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in theology or Christian education, and/or certification with emphasis in youth ministry or family ministry;
- Experience in or familiarity with scope and sequence of religious education, including planning, methodology and concepts;
- Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint;
- A driver’s license (CDL optional); and
- CPR training.
Physical:
- The ability to communicate effectively utilizing speech, vision, hearing;
- The use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations; and
- The work requires bending, squatting, reaching, with the ability to lift, carry, push or pull medium weights
Personal:
- Be a person of Christian faith who actively participates in the ULCSC community;
- Have a basic understanding of and commitment to the Lutheran tradition of Christianity and the basic teachings of the Lutheran Church;
- Ability to protect and maintain confidential information;
- Be an effective team player who takes the initiative to solve problems and helps colleagues;
- Have a well-groomed, professional appearance.
Accountability and Reporting
- Work hours: 40 hours per week; flexible hours to include Sunday morning worship, evening Confirmation Class and weekend and evening events as scheduled
- In accordance with the ULCSC Constitution, the Director of Faith Formation reports to the Congregational Council and is supervised by the Pastor.
