UNIVERSITY INTERNATIONAL CLUB NEWSLETTER, WEEK 38, 2012
Dear Internationals,
Yesterday the UIC had an introduction to the coming AIAS. In full the name is Aarhus Institute for Advanced Studies and will open in April 2013. Director Morten Kyndrup gave many an interesting piece of information about the challenges to overcome, alone to acquire the building, which is next to the International Centre. It is right across the parking lot the AIAS building and evidently undergoing a major renovation – one gets the impression that only the outside walls are left untouched. Kyndrup showed and explained the detailed plan for meeting rooms, lecture hall, offices and right inside the main entrance a hall is planned to be the place to gather – as well as to be the canteen (see the attached plan).
There are still extensive work to be finished in any other thinkable way, except for money to establish the facilities. When it comes to how to apply, how to select ‘the right brains’, how many from the present AU should be invited to a stay at AIAS and how many from abroad has to be looked into seriously when the applications have been received are to be decided on. To a large extent this also depends on who will apply. - What today is sure is that the AU vision is becoming a reality and soon enabling AU to provide researchers an excellent opportunity to pursue their individual urge, their ideas full time at the new AIAS! - Here will be exchange between the departments already on the nationwide AU campus as well as researchers coming in for shorter or longer stays and the AIAS to mutual inspiration. The aim is to create the most fruitful research work facilities possible. In full continuation of what the international director Ulla Gjørling emphasized last Wednesday at UIC: the AU goal is continuously to establish AU as a leading and visible university, where global cooperation is integrated as a natural element in all core activities. Of these the AIAS is planned to be one of the cornerstones! - Director Morten Kyndrup explained several issues with a soft approach, like ‘we do not know’, ‘we have to try’ and the like. Which to some might have given the impression that this has not been discussed yet. In some areas it is true with this major project not seen in DK before, the board and others have to learn by doing. Besides, this is very positive, for a place for research has to give room for exploration, room to set new standards, room for creativity and courage to ask all sorts of questions. Beyond comparison it should be true academic thinking area.
Attached is Kyndrup’s pp presentation for all to investigate. As the AIAS can be vital to some of you readers – or for people you know abroad for whom it could be the right place to apply, share the information with them. – As Kyndrup has added contact information do not hesitate to send him a mail, if you have additional questions.
Note: As outlined yesterday information with application rules and forms are planned to be announced sometime next month, October 2012. - Thanks very much to all for the informative, open minds for new AU ideas and for the very friendly networking.
See you and many more next week on:

INFORMATION OF GENERAL INTEREST
ANNUAL PARTY AT AARHUS UNIVERSITY
Was again a beautiful event. The Great Hall full of guests – and everyone in place in due time 10 minutes before Her Majesty the Queen of Denmark arrived - in rain! Besides taking actively part in AU’s party to celebrate its foundation, the Queen had her own special anniversary to celebrate. It was exactly 50 years ago that the then Crown Princess spent a year studying at AU (special was also the Queen having the chance of meeting two of her study friends from the fun days at AU, see the AU newspaper UNIvers). In addition please turn to AU main website for all details, videos and photos on

See the programme for the annual party
At the Annual Celebration Rector Lauritz B. Holm-Nielsen also announced the forthcoming exhibition at the AU Museum of Antique with focus on work in which the Queen in her student days at AU participated. – The evening celebration in the Concert Hall Aarhus, Musikhuset, some 2,500 guests participated. A fine combination of people from far near. The city well represented, but also the government and many more officials. Who could all enjoy excellent music performances under the theme‘Songs in the Key of Life’ - and at 9 pm a buffet was served and networking possible – and perhaps a bit hard to end!
The students had their own celebration in the open
AU’S LARGEST FRIDAYBAR AND SPORTS EVENT
The annual outdoor Friday bar was last Friday with an estimated 10,000 participants. And is reported of as a success although some rain now and then must have caused certain challenges during the sports. But nothing could stop the celebrations – and music continued till midnight, when the afterparty at the Student House took over.
BRAZILIAN DAYS AT AU
As can be seen from the attached file the AU Brazilian Days again this year offer a fine mix of cultural events as well as presentations, and discussions. Friday a roundtable discussion will take place. Entertainments in the evenings are free for everyone, and only the Friday requires registration. Help spread this excellent initiative by Lecturer by Vinicius Mariano de Carvalho Brazilian Studies, Aarhus University. An excellent destination for study purposes or for leisure. Learn about one of the BRIC countries right here in Aarhus.
Suggestion for a small, exciting excursion:
FRIDAY BJØRN NØRGAARD’S TWO TOWERS WILL OPEN IN RØNDE
The town Rønde’s first move to contribute to Aarhus as European Capital of Culture in 2017 is opening the first part of what is to become Denmark’s biggest sculpture project under the title Open Water, Aaben Vand on Kalø Square. The sculpture consist of three elements, two towers and an aqueduct (Danish text and photo of the towers are attached). - The aqueduct is 12 meter tall and around 56 meter long. The towers are 7 meter tall at the Kalø Square and the third element the so to speak End Tower is 12 meter tall. - Quite an impressive initiative of the townspeople to have the renowned Artist, Professor Bjørn Nørgaard create such a beautiful art work to help as ‘the water find its way through the town’ which brings and is in the Town Park, Byparken. The sculpture is planned to be completed by 2017. Friday at 3 pm the official opening takes place and Professor Bjørn Nørgaard will be there. – Local specialities like sausages made by meat from Mols Mountains’ cattle are served for free and more. DANISH HERITAGE: TRY SINGING FROM THE BLUE SONG BOOK, ‘SYNG FRA DEN BLÅ’
Sing songs from the Blue Song Book is one of the most popular events at the Concert Hall, Musikhuset – THIS IS HOW THE Concert Hall Aarhus announces this event. and takes place this Saturday at 12 noon. People gather to sing from the blue ‘Højskolesangbogen’, the Danish Folk High School Song Book. The Danish tradition of ‘højskoler’, Folk High Schools, goes back to N.F.S. Grundtvig, who believed in “a school for life”, where all social classes could meet and learn. Especially through lessons in Danish history, language and song. In many ways, the thought of ‘højskoler’ and general education emerged simultaneously with the demands for a new Danish constitution (it came in 1849). And given it is such an old tradition it has long proved to be of much importance also today. Alone the fact that there today still exist some 74 Folk High Schools in Denmark. The world’s oldest – and consequently DK’s first Folk High School was founded in 1844 and still exists. It is Rødding Folkehøjskole in Southern Jutland. Let me also add that Testrup Folk High School, founded in 1866 – and one of the NFS Grundtvig schools - is some 12 KM south of Aarhus and well worth a visit. It holds a number of open evening lectures or song evenings open to the public and great to join. They also welcome visitors. Look up more on Wikipedia or Join the singing this Saturday at 1 pm and get a chance to learn the Danish classics. Songbooks available, they say in the announcement: Come early to be sure of getting one. At the Café at the Concert Hall, Musikhuset , Thomas Jensens Allé, 8000 Aarhus C. Free.
Note:People from all over the world are encouraged to write up some of their experiences with living or visiting Aarhus

MOVIES IN PARADISE – BUY AND PRINT TICKETS ONLINE AND FRENCH MONDAYS
It is now possible to buy and print the tickets for the films at Paradise Cinema on their website. A good way to avoid the queue. It is still possible to only book tickets on the website and pay when you get to the cinema, e.g. a reservation fee of 5 kr per show is charged.
Paradise Cinema is known for its cosy atmosphere, nice café and interesting films and documentaries, which the mainstream cinemas do not always show. Until December they show French films every Monday (with English subtitles). A good idea for a rainy afternoon.
THE HUGE CINEMA DAY
Den store biografdag is Sunday 30 September. Watch films at half price in most cinemas nationwide.

TIME TO SAY ‘SEE YOU’ TO THE GRAUBALLEMAN AT THE NEW MOESGAARD MUSEUM!
VISIT MOESGAARD MUSEUM, BEFORE IT IS ‘TOO LATE’ IT IS CLOSING 1 OCTOBER TILL SOME TIME IN 2014
MoesgårdMuseum ismerged withOdderMuseum andisevenresponsible for theVikingMuseum inthe heart ofAarhus, next to Aarhus Cathedral. The websitewillpresentexhibitions andactivities takingplaceat all threemuseums.Moreoveryou will findinformationabout otherwork andresearch projects. This is what Moesgaard Museum is announcing on its website. What is important to say is that all the activities the next few months are fantastic. Many workshops for children, e.g. for everybody are open starting at noon, and with a small fee in addition to the admission mentioned below. You can also try being a Viking for a day. In the exhibition you can choose which of the 7 Vikings’ life you would like to try. This could be very fascinating to become a Viking back in time, trying their profession, their weapons, their food and so on. Much more to be looked into.
But you may think some later time. Well, then keep in mind for a new museum building is under construction and will by June 2014 provide unique exhibition facilities. No doubt. But it also means the Moesgaard Museum as we see it today will disappear. The disadvantage is that the museum will be closed for a longer period of time, due to the tremendous challenge it is to move the existing exhibitions into the new building and recreate them there, applying the most advanced electronically equipment. It for sure requires time, close to two years is actually the estimated time. Therefore, if you are in Aarhus for no more than one to two years, it is time to plan your visit to Moesgaard Museum now. Admission for adults is dddk60, under 18 years are free.
