The UNESCO-IHE Institute for Water Education offers post-graduate courses and PhD research programmes in Delft, The Netherlands, and carries out research and capacity building projects all over the world. The mission of UNESCO-IHE is to contribute to the education and training of professionals and to build the capacity of sector organisations, knowledge centres and other institutions active in the fields of water, the environment and infrastructure in developing countries and countries in transition.
UNESCO-IHE has a permanent staff of 160, of which 90 are scientific staff, while about 250 guest-lecturers from academia and industry contribute to the educational programme. Each year 750 participants (incl. about 200 new MSc students per year) from all over the world attend the various regular and short courses at UNESCO-IHE.
TheDepartment of Hydroinformatics and Knowledge Management is concerned with the appropriate use of information and communication technologies and modelling in bringing about the integration between aspects of the more established disciplines in the aquatic environment such as hydraulic engineering, hydrology and environmental sciences with such human sciences disciplines as management, economics and sociology. It emphasizes the importance of managing better the rapidly increasing information and knowledge of water and the environment. In particular it stresses an integrated systems approach to the information cycle in water management, including the acquisition, archiving and analysis of monitored and remote sensing data, the safe and reliable modelling of systems using different paradigms to generate new knowledge whether for optimal planning and design or for operations. It aims at the development and software integration of information (or knowledge) systems in support of responsible decision making and communications at all levels of management of the aquatic environment.
Hydroinformatics evaluates its generic tools and technologies through application to socio-technical problems involving the simulation of water quantity and quality in river basins, reservoirs, aquifers, irrigation networks, urban water systems, estuaries, and coastal waters, the interaction with ecology and morphology, and the implications for economic and social structures. It is concerned with hazard reduction, forecasting and real time control, uncertainty and risk, network-based decision-making, making use of computational intelligence, operations research and other applications of computer and systems sciences. It also has significant implications for topic areas such as capacity building, knowledge management, learning alliances, policy analysis and conflict resolution.
The Academic Core of Hydroinformatics, in the Hydroinformatics and Knowledge Management (HIKM) department coordinates the specialisation Hydroinformatics, a part of the Masters programme on Water Science and Engineering. Around 18-20 students enrol each year, including students participating in the International Masters in Hydroinformatics, which is run by a consortium including UNESCO-IHE, Hohai University, China. The Core also conducts a vigorous programme of research in the subject, much of which is carried out by PhD fellows, often with the involvement of MSc students. Research projects are funded largely through the European Union and other funding agencies in the Netherlands and elsewhere.

Researcher/Lecturer in Hydroinformatics(m/f), 1.0 FTE
Responsibilities
The new Lecturer will participate in acquisition of research funding, for continuing to build up research, and for international collaboration in hydroinformatics education and research, especially with the partners in developing countries. One of the tasks will be the support of the Web-based knowledge management systems for education and research. The candidate will have 1-4 years of experience in education or consultancy. The particular need is for a person who has practical as well as research experience in one or more of the following areas: development and use of modelling,data analysis and GIS systems,computational intelligence and optimisation, software development, systems integration.
Requirements
  • University degree in civil or environmental engineering, applied mathematics, or information and systems engineering
  • PhD in Hydroinformatics, Civil or Environmental engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computer Sciencesor a related subject
  • Several years post-doctoral experience in academia or industry
  • In-depth knowledge of Hydroinformatics Systems and their applications
