Hours per week: Approximately 15-20 – M-F, nights and weekends

High Impact Practice– By incorporating classroom learning into hands-on work experiences as well as providing supervision and coaching, students gain the necessary tools to grow and contribute as professionals. This engagement leads to increased rates of retention, graduation, and job placement.

Position Summary

In the absence of the Facilities Coordinator, Building Managers monitor and enforce University Center policies, assist University Center facilities clients, and provide services and equipment to those using University Center facilities. A Building Manager has limited supervision of other UC student employees in the proper performance of their duties.He/she distributes materials and posters in the University Center buildings, keeps the building in a neat and orderly fashion, monitors the activities that take place in the University Center, maintains security, and prepares nightly reports of the building activities. A Building Manager will report all problems to the proper office or parties, and at the end of the evening, secure and lock all University Center buildings.

Tasks (and Corresponding LEAP Essential Learning Outcomes)

Intellectual and Practical Skills

  • Ability to demonstrate good time management by arriving to work on time
  • Maintains common areas in the building (pick up trash and put furniture back)
  • Sets-up rooms for early meetings the following morning through 10:30 AM
  • Knows how to operate all house lighting systems
  • Assures all keys are accounted for at the end of the evening
  • Adjusts drapes and lighting in the University Center to conserve energy
  • Logs and places lost items in UC lost and found

Personal and Social Responsibility

  • Checks reserved rooms for proper setup, attendance, time, and cleanliness
  • Distributes and “posts” poster orders as well as other approved materials
  • Takes hourly attendance counts in the designated areas of the University Center
  • Checks in with the meetings that are taking place in the evening, and also with other employees
  • Checks in cash bags for Warhawk Alley, Information Desk/Tickets, and HawkCard office each night
  • Is available to work additional shifts due to changes in events or to help with special projects as assigned
  • Locks and secures University Center facilities

Integrative and Applied Learning

  • Verifies attendance on the Operation Report
  • Prepares the Space Utilization Report, Night report, and other special reports
  • Knows how to set-up, operate, and troubleshoot sound systems and University Center audio-visual equipment
  • Assigns one Building Manager to attend the weekly Building Use Coordinating Committee and another to perform quality control
  • Participates in a weekly Building Manager meeting to help gain feedback from fellow employees

Knowledge of Human Cultures and the Physical and Natural World

  • Supervises the performance of other student employees
  • Knows all employees and become personally acquainted with student employees
  • Workswith the University Center employees to learn and understand their jobs to help establish a feedback system on suggestions and complaints

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be a registered UW-Whitewater student enrolled at least half time
  • Must function effectively in a leadership capacity and adhere to high ethical and performance expectations
  • Must maintain an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher
