Universal Expectation: Be Safe Lesson Length: 15-20 minutes

Name of Skill/Setting: Tray Safety/Cafeteria

(Hold tray with 2 hands, keep tray at tummy level, and keep tray on table)

Purpose of Lesson (Why is this important?)

1.  To get safely to your eating area

2.  To prevent waste of food

3.  To keep people safe by avoiding slipping on spilled food

4.  To allow the clean up crew from getting behind schedule

Teaching Examples

1.  EXAMPLE: You are walking to your table with your lunch. You want to wave to your friend who is already sitting, but you know that it is important for your safety and those around you to make sure your keep both hands on your tray. When you sit down and put your tray flat on the table, then you wave to your friend.

2.  NON-EXAMPLE: You are going to take your tray to the garbage and you raise your tray above your tummy as you turn toward the middle isle. As you turn, your tray tilts and you spill peach juice onto your neighbor, the table and the floor. Your neighbor gets mad and the kid behind you slips on the floor and breaks his arm. You feel really bad.

3.  EXAMPLE: You are carrying your tray to your table. You are walking close to the person in front of you and they stop quickly. Because you are holding your tray at tummy level, you are able to keep your food on your tray and your lunch taste great.

Student Activities/Role Plays

1.  Generate a list of reasons connecting carrying your tray properly relates to being safe.

2.  Role-play a safe way and an unsafe way to carry your tray. Compare the two situations.

3.  Practice carrying your tray at tummy level (using a book and pencil).

Follow Up/Reinforcement Activities (Check for Understanding)

1.  Verbal praise and/or compliments

2.  Ask students after lunch who remembered to use tray safety (and chart it).
