UNIV X350: The Global Environment

CLASS PROJECT

100 Points

(25% of Course Grade)

EACH INDIVIDUAL STUDENT WILL:

1. Identify and analyze a Global Environmental Issue

2. Identify and analyze a local manifestation of that issue on the Cal Poly campus or within San Luis Obispo County.

Instructors will assign Small Groups in each Activity Section.

EACH GROUP WILL:

1. Select one Global Environmental Issue and a local manifestation of that Issue.

2. Analyze relevant resources and develop Technical Recommendations regarding how to address the Issue at the local level.

3. Perform an Economic Analysis by estimating the economic costs of implementing

the Technical Recommendations.

4. Develop Political Recommendations regarding political strategies necessary to

implement the Technical Recommendations.

5. Submit a Final Project Report.

6. Make a 20 minute Class Presentation of their Project.

Each Project Phase is due in your scheduled Activity Section for the Week specified.

INDIVIDUAL ASSIGNMENTS

Week 2: GLOBAL ISSUE IDENTIFICATION 10 Points

Submit a Report which

- Identifies the Global Environmental Issue

- Locates the Issue with map(s)

- Analyzes the Issue

- Documents why the Issue is a problem

The Report should include no more than 2 pages of text, plus illustrative maps, charts, diagrams, etc.

It must draw on and reference Required Course Materials listed on the course syllabus.


Week 3: LOCAL ISSUE IDENTIFICATION 10 Points

Submit a Report which

- Identifies and analyzes a specific local manifestation of the Issue.

- Locates the Issue with map(s)

The Report should include no more than 2 pages of text, plus additional illustrative maps, charts, diagrams, etc.

It must draw on and reference Required Course Materials listed on the course syllabus.

Week 5: TECHNICAL RECOMMENDATIONS 14 Points

Week 7: ECONOMIC RECOMMENTATIONSRECOMMENDATIONS 14 Points

Week 8: POLITICAL RECOMMENTATIONSRECOMMENDATIONS 14 Points

Submit two (2) copies of a Political Analysis Through the Prince System for your Project.

- State your Issue in terms of a desired political outcome.

- From the perspective of one of the Key Actors in your analysis, prepare

·  a Prince Chart

·  a Friendship/Neutrality/Hostility Chart

·  a Prince Political Map.

- Select two (2) strategies from the Strategy Guidelines on pages 35-36 of

Political Analysis Through the Prince System and describe in a short essay

no longer than 2 pages of text how your Actor could implement the strategies to raise the

probability of their success.

Week 10: FINAL PROJECT REPORT AND EXECUTIVE SUMMARY 8 Points

Assemble and integrate the previously completed components of your Project revised

to include changes recommended by your Instructor. (5 Points)

Preface your Report with a short (one page or less) Executive Summary (3 Points). See Bb.

Weeks 10 and 11: CLASS PRESENTATIONS 20 Points

Make a 20 minute presentation of your Project to your Activity Section.
