Youth Special Projects Grant

Procedures

I. Youth Allocations Fund

The United Way of the Mid-South Youth Fund Distribution Committee is accepting applications for request for funding from the Youth Special Projects Fund. Grants of up to $1,500 each will be available for programs serving youth that focus on alleviating the following community problems:

1.Alcohol and Drug Abuse, Drunk Driving;

2.AIDS/Sexually Transmitted Diseases;

3.Violent Adult Crimes;

4.Teenage Pregnancy, Sex Education, Rape and Sexual Harassment;

5.Juvenile Crime, Gangs and Violence in Schools;

6.Child Abuse, Neglect and Abandonment

7.Inadequate Housing, Homelessness, Children in Poverty

8.Life-Skills Training Program along with organized athletics &

9.Reading Programs for grades K-6.

Although these areas have been established as priorities, the Youth Fund Distribution Committee may consider funding other projects that do not address the aforementioned programs specifically.

II. The Youth Fund Distribution Committee

United Way of the Mid-South established the Youth Fund Distribution Committee in order to allow the youth of our community the opportunity to participate in the United Way allocations process. The Youth Volunteer Program was created to assist with the development of youth leadership and to assure that youth develop an awareness of non-profit charitable agencies and their role as major contributors in our community. As participants in the allocations process, our youth will understand the value of volunteerism in the Mid-South.

III. Eligibility for Applying

Agencies applying must have or be affiliated with an agency that has IRS 501(c) (3) tax exempt status.

Agencies applying must submit the completed application with required documents or application will be returned.

Agency’s program or project must focus on youth 10-18 years of age and K-6.

IV. Questions Your Proposal Needs to Address in the Narrative

(1)Please describe the program in no more than two paragraphs and how it will operate.

(2)What is innovative, creative and non-traditional about the program?

(3)What ages will this program target? How many people will benefit from your programs?

(4)Why does the target population need the benefits of this service?

(5)Is the population in need receiving these services from other agencies in Memphis/Shelby County? If so, what are these agencies and in what way does your program differ from these agencies?

(6)Are other funds available for this program? From what sources?

(7) How will the success of your program be measured at the conclusion of your program?

(8)How will youth volunteers be utilized in your program?

(9)Have you received funds from United Way of the Mid-South or the Youth Special Projects Fund?

(10)Does your program address any one of the problems mentioned above?

V. Criteria for Funding

Please be advised that if your proposal is accepted for review by the Youth Fund Distribution Committee, a team of students will call the contact person listed on the application to schedule an interview or possible site visit. This site visit gives the youth a chance to learn more about your program than they can derive from the application.

Grants awarded to projects will be from $100.00 to $1,500.00 each, and will be made on a one-time basis per program.

VI. Reporting Requirements

If funding is approved, agencies are to submit a final report of program accomplishments. Members of the Youth Fund Distribution Committee also request notification of the program for the opportunity to visit your program the day it is implemented.

The Youth Special Project Grants are reviewed on a quarterly schedule during the year. If you would like to receive consideration for a Youth Special Projects Grant, please mail the completed application to:
