2013 – 2014 Projects

WLC projects support the mission of United Way of Southern Nevada and the work in the areas of health, education and financial stability.

Breakfast with Books is in partnership with Spread the Word Nevada. The investment from WLC will provide a year of monthly school-based events, which invites parents and their children to come to Dean Peterson Elementary School (3650 Cambridge, near Maryland Parkway and Twain) for a breakfast, story time and book distribution.

Family Engagement Resource Centers (FERCs) in partnership with CCSD implements site-based strategies in 5 local high schools to increase communication with parents about student requirements to graduate on time and to achieve post-secondary success. AmeriCorps members in each school work with students: tutoring, mentoring, ensuring they are on track with credit attainment to graduate on time and assisting completion of college and scholarship applications.

Helping Kids Clinic is in partnership with the Southern Nevada Health District. The investment from WLC will provide an immunization clinic in April, 2014. This clinic will focus on approximately 500 children, age birth to 3, within the zip codes of 89119 and 89104.

Shingles Clinic for seniors in partnership with the Southern Nevada Health District. WLC funds will provide 50 seniors with the shingles vaccine. Location is Valley View Immunization Clinic and will be held in January 2014.

Medical Clinic at Reynaldo Martinez Elementary School, 350 E. Judson, North Las Vegas. (located near I-15 and Washington). A health clinic for the approximately 700 students enrolled will be operated by Positively Kids and will provide well/sick exams as well as immunizations. The clinic will be open school days (no holidays) and summer and staffed with a physician’s assistant and a medical assistant.

Emerging Leadership Award for Women, two 4-year scholarships for Clark County residents attending post-secondary education in southern Nevada. The process of promoting the scholarship, vetting applications and issuing scholarship payments are done at no cost by The Public Education Foundation (PEF). WLC sets criteria, including performance measures for recipients, participates in an annual event sponsored by PEF to present the awards and meet recipients.
