Dear Senator (Last Name) or Representative (Last Name):

I invite you to join in the Sudan Freedom Walk, taking place from March 15th to April 5th, 2006. Former Sudanese slave, Simon Deng will lead the walk from New York to Washington, DC, to shed light on the crimes, genocide, and modern day slavery ravaging his homeland, and to call for substantive U.S. government action to stop the continuing violence against and enslavement of black African Sudanese.

I specifically urge you to join The Sudan Freedom Walk’s closing rally on April 5th, in front of the Capitol. Mr. Deng says, “My hope is that the Walk will present a united front among activists and Sudanese refugees and pressure the international community to work unequivocally to bring peace and justice to Sudan.” The Sudan Campaign supports a comprehensive plan to end the violence and to create a just peace and governance in all regions of Sudan, from Darfur to Nuba, from North to South. It advocates:

  • That the U.S. Congress pass the Darfur Peace and Accountability Act without further delay, provide the $514 million in emergency funding called for by President to support humanitarian and peacekeeping programs in Darfur, and adopt Senate Resolution 383 to strengthen the peacekeeping efforts;
  • That the U.S. Government use all available means to increase pressure on the Government of Sudan until peace is secured throughout the country by continuing to implement the provisions of the Sudan Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the Comprehensive Peace in Sudan Act of 2004.
  • That the U.S. State Department reclassify the Government of Sudan as a Tier 3 Nation with regard to Human Trafficking (the worst classification possible) for its failure to make significant progress to eradicate slavery and its vestiges and that the U.S. establish a special anti-slavery task force to monitor slavery and its eradication in Sudan.

Volunteers along the route have heeded the call and have organized venues for Deng to speak and places for the other walkers and Deng to stay overnight. For details and a day-by-day schedule of the walk see

As a concerned citizen and a human being, I once again urge you to join this historic march for freedom. If your schedule does not permit any time for you to participate, then I request that you offer a letter and words of support for this righteous initiative. Please help, the people of Sudan are counting on your action.

Sincerely,
