The topic was chosen by the Educational Committee of the SCVP because sudden death is a devastating occurrence in children and young adults, not rare in those involved in sport activity. Sport activity is healthy, but at risk in people affected by concealed cardiovascular disorders. The symposium will deal with the burden of the phenomenon and the main cardiovascular disorders which may precipitate abruptly cardiac arrest, with particular attention to coronary artery disease and cardiomyopathies. There are cases in which cardiac arrest may occur even in the setting of normal heart due to inherited arrhythmic cardiomyopathies (“ion channel diseases”). Molecular investigation may be performed at postmortem (“molecular autopsy”) for detection of viral infections or gene mutations. The information deriving from autopsy with a precise diagnosis entails great importance for family members. Part of the symposium will be devoted to clinical aspects on how to identify patients at risk and whether prevention of sudden cardiac death is feasible through clinical and genetic screening.
