Nursery Childcare Worker

Job Description

The Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Wayne County (UUFWC) welcomes and supports families with young children. In order to facilitate the participation of parents in church activities, the Nursery Childcare Worker will provide childcare in accordance with the guidelines outlined below. Our mission is to create a safe, secure, nurturing, clean, and engaging environment for children while their parents or guardians are participating in church services, meetings, programs, or events.

Size of congregation: 194 members, 150 friends, 70 children

GOAL: Provide a safe, secure, nurturing, clean, and engaging environment for children up to age four during worship on Sunday mornings, and at other times for church events, meetings, and programs as scheduled by the Director of Religious Education.

HOURS: Sunday mornings from9:45 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. (June-August), from 9:15 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. (September –May), and other hours as scheduled by the Director of Religious Education. Workdays include any Sundays that also fall on holidays.

ACCOUNTABILITY: Nursery Childcare Workers report to the Director of Religious Education.

TASKS:

  1. Open and set up the nursery (i.e. check for cleanliness, set out sign-in sheet, organize activity areas). Ensure the absence of any hazards.
  1. Greet parents and children upon arrival, and particularly welcome first-time visitors: providing overview of nursery operation and allowing parent to remain with the child until comfortable with the setting.
  1. Ensure that parents sign children in and out of the nursery and that parents complete aregistration form for each child upon the child’s second visit. Consult with parents regarding the child’s health history, allergies, and any other concerns regarding the child’s well-being while in the care of the nursery.
  1. Provide age-appropriate care and safe toys and activities:

a. Organize and participate in age-appropriate activities with the children, such as games, roleplaying, reading and storytelling, songs, or simple crafts.

b. As appropriate, assist in preparing and serving simple snacks or meals for children and helping them clean up afterwards.

c. Ensure that children in diapers or in process of potty-training remain clean and dry through the use of diaper checks and potty breaks.

  1. With regard to safety and discipline, caregivers will:

a. Use positive language to direct or redirect children.

b. Refrain from physical discipline or punishment.

c. Maintain a space that is physically and emotionally safe for all children and caregivers.

d. Communicate with parents:

  1. Report what activities were done while care was provided (including if a snack, diaper change, or potty break occurred).
  2. Any concerns that need to be relayed/addressed.

f. Report problems, concerns, andincidents/accidents, to the DRE immediately and complete incident reports as needed and in a timely fashion.

  1. Clean and straighten the nursery once all children have been picked up by parents. This includes: picking up toys, wiping down counter and changing table, emptying the trash, and vacuuming the nursery. Remove any damaged/unsafe toys or expired snacks and give to the DRE.
  1. Support and comply with UUFWC’s policies and procedures.
  1. Caregivers are expected to work cooperatively with each other and share duties equitably.
  1. Work with the Director of Religious Education on scheduling and tracking of hours.
  1. Understanding that this is a position of great responsibility within the church, caregivers will make every effort to arrive on time, work when they are scheduled, and stay until the last child has been picked up. In the event of emergency or illness which prevents work, caregivers will contact the Director of Religious Education immediately so that alternative care can be arranged.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES NEEDED: Prior experience caring for children in a group setting, knowledge of child development,and a clear BCI/FBI fingerprint background check in compliance with the Child and Youth Protection Policy. CPR and First Aid certification and familiarity with Unitarian Universalismis preferred.

COMPENSATION: The hourly rate for this position is $10.00 and is paid monthly.
