This lesson incorporates Edmodo. While not a recognized learning-management system (LMS), Edmodo is a tool that is simply being utilized to expose students to collaboration, discussions, and assessments beyond the traditional classroom.

Overview/Annotation:
In this lesson students will utilize an online learning-management system to engage in a collaborative learning projects, discussions, and assessments beyond the traditional classroom that are goal-oriented, focused, project based and inquiry-oriented.
Essential Question(s):
How can online learning-management systems engage students in collaborative learning projects, discussions, and assessments?
Learning Objective(s): The students will:
  1. Participate in collaborative learning projects using an online learning-management system.
  2. Participate in discussions using an online learning-management system.
  3. Complete assessments using an online learning-management system.

  1. Teacher Preparation: Prior to using this lesson plan, the teacher must have created a group in Edmodo. Students must create also accounts and receive the group code to access the teacher’s group.

The following are examples of how an online learning-management system can be used to engage collaborative learning projects, discussion and assessments. Online learning-management systems can be utilized at any point in the course.
  1. Uploading Career Cluster PowerPoint: Assign students to a group to create a collaborative PowerPoint on a specific career cluster. Once the PowerPoint is complete, have one student from the group upload the group’s PowerPoint to the online learning management system. (Presentation software is covered in Course of Study Standard 7b.)
  2. Upload a paper previously written by student on digital citizenship and have students read another student’s paper, making comments on that paper using the messaging feature of the online learning-management system. (Digital citizenship is covered in Course of Study Standard 12.)
  3. Uploading a Resume: Upload to the online learning management system a resume previously created by student. (Resumes are covered in Course of Study Standard 6.)
  4. Uploading a Cover Letter: Upload to the online learning management system the cover letter previously created by student. (Cover letters are covered in Course of Study Standard 6.)
  5. Start a discussion in the online learning-management system about reasons why a budget is important. (Budgeting is covered in Course of Study Standard 15.)
  6. Start a discussion in the online learning-management system about how to consumers can stay safe when online. (Consumer safety is covered in the Course of Study Standard 14.)
  7. Take a student poll in the online learning-management system to answer the question: Do you think there is a connection between education, training, and salary? Yes, No, Maybe.
  8. Take a student poll in the online learning-management system to answer the question: What is your favorite food: Hamburger, Hot Dogs, and Pizza?
  9. Take a student poll in the online learning-management system to integrate CTSO into curriculum.
  10. Create an Exit Slip as a formative assessment using Edmodo quizzes.
  11. Conduct a summative assessment with Edmodo quizzes. For example, administer a multiple choice quiz on stocks, bonds, and mutual funds.
