Learning Activities:

  1. Unpack the standard-what does it mean to classify organisms? Write in kid-friendly terms.
  2. Define characteristics.
  3. Describe characteristics of self.
  4. Describe characteristics of a friend.
  5. What is classification? Shoe Classification Game. Have students sit in a circle and take one shoe off an put in the center of the circle. The teacher makes two groups of shoes based on a certain characteristic (say shoe laces). The kids have to figure out how the shoes were grouped. Begin to classify by tougher characteristics and then give the kids a shot.
  6. Computer game to enforce characteristics of animals.
  7. Tree Map Creation-Types of Animals Classification-Mammals, Birds, Reptiles, Amphibians, Fish
  8. Put the animal your researching under the Animal Classification Tree Map
  9. Culminating Activity-Create a zoo with the class that includes all the animals you have researched.

Culminating Activity: Higher Level Learning: Decision Making and Problem Solving

The zoo in your community is 5 hours away and the kids in your area are sad they never get to learn about animals by seeing them. Your rich uncle has given your class a piece of land and said you could build a zoo if the community members think it’s a good idea. Each of you will have a role in convincing the community to agree to build a zoo and will design the zoo.

Level 3 students will make a speech to convince the community to spend money on building a zoo. They will have to pay taxes to make the zoo happened. You will have to present your reasons why a zoo should be built to the class using an audible voice.

Level 4students will have two big jobs. You will play as community members. Your job is to ask questions about the zoo when level 3 students are trying to convince you to spend tax dollars to open the zoo. You need to make suggestion and ideas of how you want the zoo to look, what animals are in it, and suggest solutions to the problems around creating the zoo. Your job will be to find evidence of how zoo can benefit communities and assure that information is shared at the meeting.

Level 5 students will be the managers of the zoo. They will have to take what they learned at the community meeting and design the zoo. They will make a list of facts and opinions that were generated at the community meeting. They will also assign jobs to each class member telling them specific criteria they need to meet to get the job at the zoo.
