UNIT 6: THE METRIC DECIMAL SYSTEM

6.1 Measurement

Different units of measurement have been used in the past, some of them are still in use in UK and USA, but in most places is used the Metric System of Measurements. The metric units are:

Length metre Volume cubic metre Mass or weight gram

Area square metre Capacity litre

6.2 Measuring length:

The base unit of length is the metre(m).

The multiples of the meter are: The divisors of the metre are:

* Decametre(dam) 1dam=10m * Decimetre(dm) 1dm=0,1m

* Hectometre (hm) 1hm= m * Centimetre(cm) 1cm= m

* Kilometre(km) 1km= m *Millimetre(mm) 1mm= m

Km / hm / dam / m / dm / cm / mm
4 / 0 / 0 / 0 / 0

Exercise:

a) How many cm are there in 400m? 400 m = 40.000cm

b) How many dam are there in 1 km?

c) How many cm are there in 2hm?

d) How many hm are there in 1 dam?

6.3. Measuring Capacity

The base unit of capacity is the litre(l).

The multiples of the litre are: The divisors of the litre are:

* Decalitre(dal) * Decilitre(dl)

* Hectolitre (hl) * Centilitre(cl)

* Kilolitre(kl) *Millilitre(ml)

Kl / hl / dal / l / dl / cl / ml
4 / 0 / 0

Exercise:

a) How many dl are there in 40 l ? 40 l = 400dl

b) How many ml are there in 67 hl ?

c) How many l are there in 0,08 hl?

d) How many dl are there in 17 ml ?

6.4 Measuring Weight

The base unit of weight is the gram( g).

The multiples of the gram are: The divisors of the gram are:

* Decagram(dag) * Decigram (dg)

* Hectogram (hg) * Centigram (cg)

* Kilogram (kg) *Milligram(mg)

Kg / hg / dag / g / dg / cg / mg
0 / 0 / 6

Exercise:

a) How many kg are 6dag ? 6dag= 0,06 kg

b) How many dag are 250 hg ?

c) How many hg are 0,04 kg ?

d) How many kg are 25 g ?

6.5. Measuring Area

The base unit of area is the square metre(m).

The multiples of the m are: The divisors of the m are:

* S. Decametre(dam) * S.Decimetre(dm)

*S. Hectometre (hm) *S. Centimetre(cm)

* S. Kilometre(km) *S. Millimetre(mm)

km / hm / dam / m / dm / cm / mm
6 / 8 / 0 / 0

Exercise:

a) How many damare there in 68 hm? 68 hm= 6.800 dam

b) How many dm are there in 2.340 hm ?

c) How many cm are there in 60 m ?

d) How many m are there in 200 dam ?

6.6. Measuring Volume

The distinction between 'Volume' and 'Capacity' is artificial and kept here only for historic reasons. A cubic metre is 1000 litres

The multiples of the m are: The divisors of the m are:

* C. Decametre(dam) * C.Decimetre(dm)

* C. Hectometre (hm) *C. Centimetre(cm)

* C. Kilometre(km) *C. Millimetre(mm)

km / hm / dam / m / dm / cm / mm
2 / 5 / 0 / 0 / 0

Exercise:

a) How many dam are there in 25 hm? 25 hm= 25.000 dam

b) How many dm are there in 128 hm ?

c) How many hm are there in 60 m ?
