COURSE MARK:

Class Performance 10

Assignments 55

Unit Assessments 20

Course Assessment – Comprehensive 15

Class Performance:

Once a month students will be asked to grade themselves using a rubric developed by the Social Studies Core covering the following criteria: effort, attentiveness, attitude, contribution, and participation. The teacher will also grade each student using the same rubric and an average of the two rubrics will be used to develop a monthly participation mark.

Assignments:

This will cover such items as current events, reading assignments, video questions and up to some smaller projects. Larger assignments and smaller projects will be marked according to the rubrics handed out with each of these assignments. Short assignments will be marked according to the information given with each assignment.

Major Assignments:

This will cover essays and large projects considered to be covering material of greater significance or quantity and may be assigned to be done either individually or in groups. The activities may be broken into smaller components or done as one activity. Major assignments will be marked according to the rubrics handed out with each of theses activities.

Unit Assessments:

This will tend to be tests and quizzes but may also include a project or activity that covers the entire unit. Students who miss school or class on the day of the test for legitimate reasons and have had parent or guardian contact the school will be given a chance to write an alternative test (not the same one, to avoid the student gaining an advantage) as close to the original test date as possible. Students who miss a test without having parent or guardian contacting the school will NOT be allowed to write the test and will receive a mark of zero.

Course Assessment:

This will be an exam covering the entire course. Students will be given an exam review a few days ahead of the final exam to help them prepare.

Marking:

Assignments not handed in on time are subject to a loss of 10% per day to a maximum of 50% of the mark. The exception to this is if the student is missing school for a legitimate reason and their parent or guardian has contacted the school, in this case the assignment is due as soon as the student returns to school. In the case of an excused late assignment the student MUST fill out and attach a late slip to the assignment.

Assignments not handed in by the end of class on ______will not appear on report card 1 but will be marked and appear on the next report card, on ______will not appear on report card 2 but will be marked and appear on the final report card, and on ______will not be on the final report card and will be given a mark of zero!

Barring unexpected issues students will receive assignments and tests within 1 week of the due date or the majority of students handing the material in. Projects and essays will be returned within 2 weeks of the due date or the majority of students handing the material in. Marks will be recorded into the grade book no later the day after the material is returned. Assignments, tests, projects or essays that are handed in late will be marked and recorded when the teacher has time, there will be no guarantees on return time.
