Layout: sequence of material supports the argument and purpose; shows connections between ideas; demonstrates writer’s control over organizational patterns of information. The sequence and placement of materials are motivated by a consideration of the audience and purpose of the project. Shows careful attention to the placement of text and image on the page, the use of fonts and special effects, and the physical layout (ie folds) of the pamphlet. In explaining layout choices moves beyond why and what those choices do to describe how those layout choices achieve the desired effects. / /30
Text and Image: successfully integrates text and images. Uses images to reinforce the message of the text, and the text to reinforce the images. Clearly explains the choices of text and image, showing awareness of the different effects of each and how those effects serve the purpose of the pamphlet. / /10
Stance: the project clearly articulates the writer's position. That position centers on a point of controversy or contention in the issue covered and does not merely provide factual information about the issue. Writer shows clear ability to manipulate the presentation of text and images to establish, support, and develop that stance. Demonstrates knowledge of arguments counter to the writer's position. / /20
Evidence: uses types of evidence appropriate to the purpose and audience of the project. Shows clear understanding of the limits and effects of each type of evidence. Presents both sides of the issue, effectively integrating (and appropriating) opposing viewpoints into the pamphlet's argument. Demonstrates a thorough understanding of the issue and the myriad of voices and opinions surrounding that issue. Cites at least five sources. / /10
Format and Mechanics: inserts secondary material in appropriate and interesting ways; demonstrates an ability to integrate sources; sources cited correctly according to MLA style guidelines; grammar and mechanics clearly express the writer's meaning; demonstrates careful attention to proofreading; does not exceed the 750 word limit in the metapaper or the 8.5 x 11 size of the pamphlet. / /10
