A Canadian Consultant working with UNICEF on child trafficking in Sierra Leone, Rebecca Surtees, has met with members of the National Youth Coalition for Human Right (NYCHR) at the Care International office at Wilkinson Road in Freetown.
Addressing members recently, Mrs. Rebecca explained that her preliminary assessment in trafficking in persons especially in children, concerns about the methodology used by traffickers and what should be done to combat it.
Mrs. Rebecca said that she is hopeful that other communities in the rural areas will get more facts on child trafficking in the country. She assured the youth coalition of her willingness to give a supporting hand in combating child trafficking in the country, adding that after the completion of her research work, she will prepare a concept document which will be presented to the appropriate authorities for action.
She however cautioned the youth coalition on the way they attack issues relating to human trafficking, urging that sacrifice, cannibalism and other related cases, should not be associated with human trafficking. These she said, are other forms of human right violations.
The National Coordinator of the National Movement for Democracy and Human Rights (NMDHR), James Mathenes, who also double as Chairman of NYCHR, gave a brief history about the coalition. According to him, the coalition comprises of thirty different youth groups in the country and was borne when it was realised that issues relating to human trafficking were not being addressed by any group in the country. The Chairman further stated that a total of thirty groups came together and decided to form an umbrella body that will sensitize the people about the dangers involved in human trafficking.
Mr. Abdul Habib, a member of the coalition, assured the consultants that the coalition will organise activities to educate the people on the dangers of trafficking all over the country.
