Paulette PoujolOriol

Undergraduate Global Feminist Research Award

This UCSB undergraduate student award is generously established by Claudine Michel, Professor of Black Studies and Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs at UC Santa Barbara, in memory of her mother, Paulette PoujolOriol. An award-winning author, actress, playwright, and activist, PoujolOriol was a feminist leader who advocated for Haitian women’s rights in all of her work. She was a renaissance woman, having lived in France as a young child, later studying in Port-au-Prince and Jamaica and having fluency in French, Kreyòl, and Spanish with advanced knowledge of English, Italian and German. PoujolOriol was a member and long-term president of the oldest women’s organization in the country, the Ligue Feminine D’ActionSociale (Women’s League for Social Action) founded in 1934 and a founding member of the umbrella organization for over 50 groups, L’Alliance des Femmes Haïtiennes (The Alliance of Haitian Women).

The purpose of this research award is to support undergraduate student research pertaining to issues of global feminism and social justice, specifically as it relates to communities of Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, and their Diasporas. Eligible students: Feminist Studies majors/minors and LGBTQ minors.

We welcome self-nominations and nominations from professors, TAs, and student affairs staff members. The nomination will use the form provided and give the student’s name, Perm number, and recommendation for support of a specific research plan. Allowable expenses include items such as books, printing, research participant incentive gift cards, archive access, and travel for research or to present at a conference (airfare, accommodations, and local transportation).

The award will be $500. Reimbursement will be provided only with original receipts. Receipts are due to Sonya Baker in Feminist Studies main office within 4 weeks of spending, submitted on the appropriate accounting forms that will be given.

The review committee will be comprised of the Chair of Feminist Studies and other appointed faculty members.Demonstrated academic achievement and feasibility of the student’s research plans are the primary criteria.

The nomination deadline is by 4pm on May 7th, and notification will be provided to awardees by May 14th. Awardees will be honored at the Feminist Studies Graduation Celebration event on May 31 5-7p.m. at the Mosher Alumni House. The nomination form should be submitted to Crystal Carlos, Student Affairs Coordinator in Feminist Studies, at with the subject line PoujolOriol Research Award.
