Reporting Period: School Year 2007-2008

Tutoring Overview

One of the objectives of this grant was to

Increase by 25% the number of students in the 3 high schools served, who successfully pass the High School Assessments (HSA) compared with last year’s class.

The goal was to help students be prepared for the HSA.

UMES collaborated with WicomicoHigh School in Salisbury, CrisfieldHigh School in Crisfield, and WashingtonHigh School in Princess Anne to provide tutoring to GU students under this grant.

Outcome: Students who participate in the after school HSA tutoring sessions will increase their chances of passing the exam.

  • Students will be better prepared academically for this required exam.
  • Students will be given test taking strategies which will enhance their ability to pass the HSA
  • Students will have more confidence in their test taking skills.

To achieve this goal the program

  • offered after school HSA preparation classes to GU students. One section to Somerset County and one to Wicomico County, which includes serving the three mentioned high schools.
  • had teachers & GU coordinators identify and recruit students
  • hired qualified tutors and/or UMES graduate students from each county to work with students.
  • 30 students Fall / 30 students Spring
  • Project director worked with instructors and, as appropriate GU coordinator, to assess student progress midway throughout the preparation classes.

Cindy Lawson, a teacher at CrisfieldHigh School wrote the following about one of the tutors, Michael Guy:

“Michael has come to my math class once or twice every week over the last three months. He has worked with the students in the classroom.
