The “Ukrainian Books for Education in Tolerance” Project is financed by Matra Programme of the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Anne Frank House, and the Fund for Central & East European Book Projects, Amsterdam

Project duration: October 2008 – September 2011.

Overall objective(s)

To improve the situation of discriminated minorities, to counter discrimination, xenophobia, and antisemitism, and to further tolerance and respect for diversity

Project goal

Promoting tolerance in educational system and in wider public opinion

Key problem(s)

·  Discrimination of minorities, antisemitism, and xenophobia

·  Lack of knowledge of teachers about these topics

·  Lack of general books and textbooks for secondary and tertiary education on these topics

·  Bias in the media

Activities

·  16 titles of educational pilot editions and resources on tolerance, combating antisemitism and xenophobia developed by project partners are reprinted

·  the translation and publication of 11 educational resources and books during 2009 – 2011

To achieve the objectives of the Project, seminars will be held in all oblasts’ centers of Ukraine for four target groups:

1) History teachers of secondary schools

2) secondary school supervisors and administrators from local oblast departments of education (policy makers)

3) lecturers and students in Civic Education and History at Pedagogical Universities, and supervisors

4) librarians and journalists

The seminars consist of two parts: lectures and trainings.

The following Ukrainian partner organizations provide experienced trainers:

·  The Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies (UCHS)

·  Jewish Studies Institute

·  The Congress of National Minorities of Ukraine

·  The Jewish Foundation of Ukraine (JFU)
