“Communist Ideology and Left Wing Women Politics in Bengal; Organisations, Activities and Movement (1942-1977)”

11.Brief Objectives of the Project:

The present research work has been undertaken for a number of reasons. Firstly, no book has been published and no research work has yet been done on the ideas, activities and movements by women of Bengal inspired by communist ideology. Therefore I have tried to do my best to find their contributions in this area. Perhaps the findings will be essential to form a disciplined approach to women’s studies in modern Bengal.

Secondly, this study with deal with socio-economic conditions of the state and political scenario are the staid period.

Thirdly, this work will be helpful to understand the circumstances for the present condition of women in Bengal.

Therefore I intend to prepare my project on this topic.

12. Whether Objectives Were Achieved

Yes, all the objectives were achieved so far in the present project which is shown in the summary of findings and also in the book form of the final report.

Objective: In the research project, the contribution of the communist women from 1942 to 1977 has been stated. The leftist women’s association, their measures and revolutions are researched and analyzed.

The things and ideas that became prominent in this project were –

Firstly, in this period, the communist women association raised their voice against any social injustice, conducted meetings and assemblies, united many people to earn their demand and sometimes they stood beside the male members of the communist party to continue their movement together, for example – landless refugee problems, protest against the rise of tram fare, struggling the release of the prisoners opposing the code of Hindu Marriage Bill, opposing the union of Bangla-Bihar and revolution for the equal food distribution.

Secondly, landless refugee problem was a burning socio-economic problem. To solve this problem the communist women association took steps, besides they took part in peasant’s revolution, economic upliftment of the labourers, the exploitation of the rich over the poor, protest against labour unrest, etc. They were not succeeded at every step but their adventure and effort brought about a great change. In this project their activities are described.

Thirdly, in this time the communist women tried hard to solve the food crisis and the problems concerning this crisis. The reformation in rationing system was also an important step taken by the association.

Fourthly, despite their nominal members, the communist women association took part in the international women’s assembly.

Fifthly, the association also fought for the security of the women. For example they demanded to step up girls’ school, demanded equality in the sphere of profession, fought against the code of Hindu Marriage Law and demanded for equal social justice. In this project these ideas are discussed.

However, in this period, the communist women association has been weakened time and again on the question of principles and obviously it was a great obstacle in their progress. The association was not so well woven and the indifference of the communist party towards its women association was also a snag in the way of women association. These are mentioned in this project.
