The queues are quite long!

February: InternationalSchool of
Storytelling
Sing! Dance! Tell stories if you want to develop new neural pathways in your brain! This was the rather surprising advice from Sue Hollingsworth, arising out of the power of traditional story-telling. In an age where impersonal television and technology can effectively be said to have replaced the faculty of imagination, this is a valuable insight, which the speaker proceeded to illustrate by telling two thought-provoking tales, to which the large audience was invited to respond. Something fresh and different - not by any means an “ordinary” meeting!
March: Debate on Nuclear Power
Don Mingay & Joachim Zimmer
Moderator: Maciej Soltynski.
To quote an old but well-known saying: “Those who know most about nuclear energy are the most nervous.” Not today! Now, owing to improved design, it might be “Those who know most about nuclear energy are the least nervous.” And so the debate continues... rather like the debate on 27 March at the Baxter. / Two well-manneredgentlemen at the microphone, bothurging the audience to “consider the facts of the matter”. And there were facts a-plenty; almost too numerous and complex to absorb. Look at this: “Wind power is clean and efficient.” “But it’s not efficient when the wind fails or blows at the wrong speed and it also takes up too much land.” “But each individual windmill has a ‘footprint’ of only one square metre!” “A wind farm covers a lot of ground, and that can be costly!” “Then we must build them off-shore.” “That’s even more costly, and the UK has just endedits project.” “But that’s their politics!” The costs, the practicalities, the carbon emissions, the supposed danger of nuclear waste – all of these were argued back and forth.
In the end, the audience voted – 70 :30% in favour of nuclear energy in South Africa. Let’s just hope that this was an “enlightened and empowered” opinion! Many thanks to all the participants, and to Stefan Pretorius for arranging a stimulating debate.

Tours

On Derick Rule’s recent tour to Arniston, greatly enjoyed by all, a highlight was the visit to the local primary school in the fisherfolk village of Kassiesbaai. Funds from the tour were used to supply books, sweets and other gifts to the 160 children at the school. Undoubtedly a highlight for them and their teachers as well!

You can still enquire about the next trip to Sutherland – 23 June.
