U. S. History Syllabus
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Your son/daughter is enrolled in a U.S. History class that will be taught via an interactive approach that requires a high level of student participation. You can contribute to your child’s success by encouraging him/her to complete all work and to actively participate in the class. Please take a few minutes to read through the description of this course and discuss the syllabus with your child. Your support will be greatly appreciated.
SUPPLIES:
1. 3-ring notebook with dividers or section spiral notebook with pockets
2. Blue or black pen (preferably)
3. #2 pencils
The course of study will be as follows:
Unit 1 – Freedom Week (Principles of America’s founding)
Unit 2 – The Gilded Age (1877-1910)
Unit 3 – The Progressive Era (1890 – 1920)
Unit 4 – Rise to World Power (Spanish American War & World War I 1898-1918)
Unit 5 – The Roaring Twenties (1918-1929)
Unit 6 – The Great Depression (1929-1941)
Unit 7 – World War II (Causes and Fighting 1933 – 1945)
Unit 8 – Cold War (1941 – 1991)
Unit 9 – Civil Rights Movement (1954 – Continuing)
Unit 10 – Vietnam War and the 1960’s
Unit 11 – The 1970’s and 1980’s
Unit 12 – The 1990’s to Present day
Parents, Please Note – Your student will have weekly homework in the form of one of the following:
1. Review Must Know Dates, Amendments, Court Cases for twice monthly quizzes.
2. Review any notes that were taken in class.
3. Complete any specific homework assignment that was not completed in class.
4. Review for weekly CBA quiz (generally on Friday’s)
GRADING SYSTEM – Your grades will be averaged every six weeks and will be determined using the following percentages:
ASSESSMENT – 40%
DAILY WORK – 50%
READING/WRITING – 10%
The final exam will count 20% of your semester grade and the average of the three six-week’s grades will count 80% of the semester grade.
ASSESSMENT – Assessment will be of two types (announced and unannounced quizzes/tests. The announced quizzes/tests will be announced at least one week in advance and your will be told what to review. The unannounced quizzes/tests can occur at the end of a class period, the middle of a class period, or at the beginning of the next class period.
If you are absent the day of a quiz/test, you will have five (5) class periods, beginning the day you return to class to make the quiz/test up. It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to make arrangements for making up the quiz/test. Quizzes/tests will be made up prior to class or at the end of the school day. These quizzes/tests will not be made up during class. If your child fails a test he/she may re-test but cannot receive a grade higher than a 70 for the re-test
Assessment can also be a product that is created after completing student research.
DAILY WORK – This is considered to be ANY work that is done in class. It also includes participation in classroom discussions and in group work that will be done in class. You will be expected to be an active participant in your group and to respond to questions that are asked.
HOMEWORK – Any work that is strictly assigned for outside the classroom (very rare). Will generally count as a daily assignment unless otherwise noted by the teacher.
Academic dishonesty will not be tolerated. Students, who copy from each other, plagiarize from published materials, or otherwise cheat will receive irreplaceable 0’s on those assignments.
Late work: Work will be accepted one class period late for a maximum of 80, and two class periods late for a maximum of 60. No assignment will be accepted after that.
Missed work due to absences – This work may be made up. However, it is the student’s responsibility to check with me for their makeup work. All make-up work will be due five days after the student returns to class. A longer time may be allowed if the situation warrants. It is the student’s responsibility to remember to turn in makeup work. If the student forgets, the work will not be accepted late. A zero will be recorded if the work is not turned in when due.
Discipline: Students are expected to comply with all school rules as outlined in the Student Handbook.
Tutorials: Students may attend tutorials Wednesday and/or Thursday from 2:35 – 3:35.
