1. Welcome and Call to Order
2. 2/26/2013 Division Meeting Minutes Approved
3. Phyllis Braxton – new Student Services Vice President – introduced herself to the Division and invited the faculty to come by to talk to her as needed.
4. Summer School
a. The Division requests to add a section of hybrid and online Eng. 101 and 103 to the summer schedule of classes.
b. The Division also requests for a section of ESL 5B or ESL 6B to be added to the summer schedule.
c. Sections of Speech 101 and 121 can be offered as hybrid or online classes. Speech 121 could also be offered as an online class.
d. There was a question about the seat limit of 60 for summer classes. Judith-Anne Friedman told the instructors at the meeting that the number is a proposal to the AFT. Seat limits can be waived by the AFT. She suggests that any concerns and discussions should be taken to the Academic Senate (Adrienne Foster) and the AFT (Olga Shewfelt). In the past, the seat limit for English classes was 40 and 50 for speech classes.
e. F. Leonard said that she would email O. Shewfelt to ask what the Division can go to address the seat limit proposal.
f. J. A. Friedman announced that seniority lists are being updated, based on the first date of hire, and must be posted online. The information column with that information may be hidden if faculty request privacy.
5. FPIP Presentation
a. C. Norris and F. Leonard will present the rationale for FPIP on Wednesday, March 13. They will talk about how many are in the division and how many have re-assigned time. Eight full-time instructors are in the Division. Twenty-eight classes were taught by full-time instructors while twenty-six classes were taught by adjunct instructors.
b. In response to a request to hire a reading specialist, J. A. Friedman pointed out that there was already a reading specialist in the Learning Center, Sue De Bord, who has trained a new group of literacy tutors.
c. N. Sander mentioned the Reading Apprenticeship program. C. Norris, K. Quitschau, and N. Sander are resources to other faculty about this program, which is being used now to help the students of these instructors.
6. SLO Update
a. Eng. 20 – M. Wallach has provided samples of Eng. 20A student work, but the SLO has not yet been finished. N. Lincke-Ivić offered to complete the SLO.
b. L. Alexander requests a Communication Skills Etudes shell to capture adjunct dialog for the Division.
7. Student Success Best Practices
a. Increasing the number of students completing sequential classes – C. Norris is in favor of allowing students to re-assess to skip a course in the sequence. Some students lack confidence and are reluctant to move on to complete the English class sequence.
b. C. Norris distributed an invitation to the Experiential Learning Institute Brown Bag Roundtable and the latest ATD newsletter. There will be discussion of issues affecting student success.
c. N. Sander would like to get data on whether ESL students are passing transfer courses while in or after having taken ESL classes. Also, do students who assessed into Eng. 21 and passed Eng. 21 pass transfer courses?
d. C. Norris would like to find out how students assessed into Eng. 21 do in transfer/gateway courses. L. Cordova reported that City College found data that students who struggled in Eng. 21 struggled in gateway classes.
The meeting adjourned at 4:30 P.M. The next meeting will be 3/20/2013 at 1:00 p.m.
