Position Description

Tutor/ Teacher– ReFresh Program

Program Outline:

ReFresh is an alternative educational program for young people aged 15-17 who are at risk or already disengaged from education. The program provides learning in a way that encourages students to remain engaged in their schooling by creating learning opportunities that are practical and relevant to themselves, the community and their environment.

The program also plays a vital role in creating pathway opportunities into other programs such as VCAL, returning to school, apprenticeships and TAFE, and eventually into sustainable employment.

A strong emphasis of the program is supported learning, group work, connecting to the wider community, pathways planning and the building/strengthening of self-esteem and confidence.

The ReFresh Program operates out of Avenue Neighbourhood House @ Eley and is based in BlackburnSouth. The Avenue Neighbourhood House @ Eley is a not-for-profit organisation that deliver opportunities for networking, volunteering, skills development and training.

Staff Requirements

Position Summary

The ReFresh program provides for the delivery of Certificate 1 in General Education for Adults (Introductory) and Certificate 1 in General Education for Adultsto young people who experience barriers to mainstream education. The incumbent of this position is responsible for the development, delivery and evaluation of the program, in conjunction with and accountable to the Further Education Coordinator. The role is supported by a youth worker who provides assistance and support in the classroom.

Key responsibility areas:

  • Work with the Further Education Coordinator, Manager and other members of the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) team to develop learning materials, activities and assessment in line with CGEA guidelines.
  • Work with the Further Education Coordinator, Manager and other members of the RTO team to create a learning environment in which students feel welcome, safe and supported.
  • Utilise creative and innovative teaching and learning approaches in delivering the CGEA to address the learning needs of young people facing a range of barriers to participating in mainstream education.
  • Ensure all necessary documentation is prepared and records kept, in accordance with VRQA and AQTF requirements, including planning documentation, and assessment and attendance records
  • Develop relationships with local community organisations to enhance and broaden the learning experience for students in the program.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement processes through ongoing monitoring, program evaluation and review.
  • Ensure all activities associated with the ReFresh program, including those conducted with students, team members and the community,adhere to the Occupational Health and Safety policy and procedures of the organisation.
  • Provide advice to the Further Education Coordinator on issues that may arise with students which may indicate a risk of non-completion.
  • Work in conjunction with youth worker team to ensure educational and emotional needs of students are met

Key Selection Criteria

  • Clear understanding of and a demonstrated ability to deliver CGEA
  • Understanding of and demonstrated ability to deliver flexible innovative teaching and assessment strategies, including an ability to tailor teaching/learning to individual needs and interests.
  • Understanding of and desire to work with disadvantaged young people who experience barriers to educational success.
  • Sound understanding of the training system in Victoria, and compliance and reporting requirements for Registered Training Organisations.
  • Demonstrated experience in working “beyond the classroom” in delivery of education programs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including ability to build positive working relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including young people, parents, Avenue staff, volunteers, employers, school representatives, training and employment sectors, community and government agencies.
  • Demonstrated ability to ensure reporting and all administrative tasks are completed to a high level and on time
