Tutor Code of Ethics & Conduct
1. I will be committed at all times to acting in the best interests of tutees.
2. I understand that my role as a tutor is to assist tutees in developing learner independence by helping them to learn how they best learn and to develop the skills necessary to achieve their most effective and efficient learning.
3. As implied in #2 (above), I undertake never do a tutee’s work for him or her.
4. While always working to build tutees’ self-confidence and demonstrating faith in their learning abilities, I will give accurate and honest feedback to tutees.
5. While tutoring, I will give my undivided attention to tutees.
6. I understand that my relationship to the student is professional rather than personal, and I will avoid establishing inappropriate relationships with tutees.
7. I will respect every tutee’s uniqueness and personal dignity at all times by accepting him or her without judgment.
8. I will not use a tutoring situation to proselytize my personal belief system.
9. I will respect, and will work to improve my sensitivity to, tutees’ cultural, individual and role differences, including those based on age, gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, culture, national origin, religion, disability, language and socioeconomic status.
10. I recognize the existence of individual learning styles and will remain flexible in my approach to student learning.
11. Recognizing that I may not be able to meet all of the needs of tutees, I will be willing to seek assistance from more qualified employees and/or to direct tutees to appropriate resources when tutees’ needs exceed the boundaries of my competence and expertise.
12. I will fulfill all of my commitments to tutees - including those relating to punctuality and attendance - out of courtesy and so as to be a good example for my tutees.
13. I will keep all information about tutees confidential.
14. I will share any significant concerns that I have with my supervisor.
15. I will keep current in both my subject area(s) and learning methodologies.
16. I will act professionally with regard to my colleagues and the college by never commenting negatively on instructors, other tutors, grading policies, the nature of assignments, or the operations of the college.
17. When on duty as a tutor, I will conduct myself in a professional manner.
18. I will establish a safe environment where students feel comfortable to ask questions and admit weaknesses.
19. I will not tutor any form of tests, including take-home tests/essays.
20. Ensure that the student has a clear understanding of the tutor’s role in supplementing the class, not substituting for it.
21. Never speculate on grades (i.e. “you’ll definitely get an A in this course”).
