Tutor Biographies

Caroline Lumsdentrained as a violinist at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and then as a primary school teacher at the Gypsy Hill College of Education. Caroline has taught at the Junior Departments of the GSMD and Junior Trinity, where she initiated and directed the first String Time Programme for 3-13 year olds. Caroline now teaches at the Gloucester Academy of Music Dean Close School and for the New Schools Agency, a partnership between GAM and the Cheltenham International Music Festival. She has many publications to her name published by Musicland, Edition Peters and Faber.

Kay Tuckerstudied cello at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Her career has combined teaching and adjudicating with performing as a soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player. Kay’s passion for teaching led her to develop an early years strings and musicianship system. Since its inception in 2004, ‘Stringbabies’ has become well-established and accepted as a leading approach in strings teaching and is being delivered throughout the UK and abroad in private teaching practices, schools and music services. In 2013 and 2014, Stringbabies was shortlisted for the Inaugural Rhinegold Music Teachers Awards for Excellence in music education.

Catherine Yates was, for many years, a violinist with the Sorrel Quartet, one of Britain’s foremost ensembles. In 2007, Catherine took up the position of Principal Second Violin with the Hallé Orchestra, and then in 2013 she was appointed Deputy Head of the School of Strings at the RNCM. She continues to perform regularly, including performances as Guest Principal with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, Welsh National Opera and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.

Sunday 31 January, 9am-3.30pm

Join us at the RNCM for a fun and inspiring day of workshops and ensemble playing. Our expert tutors will help you improve your sight-reading, encourage you to explore new sound qualities on your instruments, andgive you the opportunity to discover the joy of playing as part of an ensemble!

You will spend the day working in groups of like-minded and similarly experienced string players. Don’t worry if you don’t know anybody else to start with; there will be plenty of friendly tutors who will introduce you to other students.

We are delighted to be joined for the day by some of the UK’s most highly-regarded strings teachers. Caroline Lumsden,Kay Tucker and Catherine Yates will lead workshops for you in the morning and then you will spend the afternoon playing in a large string ensemble, leading to a fun and informal performance at the end of the day. All the tutors involved in the day are friendly and approachable, and are very experienced at working with young children.

All applications must be received by Thursday 21 January. After this date, please telephone or email Bryony to enquire if there are places available. Places will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that the play day is only open to bowed string instruments (violin, viola, cello and double bass).
