Risk of falling items / self, students / Ensure any items stacked on shelves are securely placed, use ladders to access items above shoulder height, wear impact resistant footwear.

flames / Self, students, visitors / Avoid naked flames where possible. Use naked flames outside where possible. Sweep up properly immediately prior to naked flame use, keep a powder extinguisher to hand.
Risk of injury through
lifting and carrying / Self / Adhere to standard published advice on lifting – legs bent, back straight, load held in to chest, if in doubt seek help.
Risk of injury from
Turning breakages / Self, students, visitors / Stay out of the “line of fire” wherever poss, always use safety specs, keep lathe speed appropriate, use full face shield where required. Assess wood prior to turning (shakes voids etc). stabilise wood where required or if in doubt (glue, and or wrap the piece up)
noise / Self, students / Use appropriate PPE
Vibration from power tools / Self, students / Ensure tools are sharp if appropriate, limit exposure to 20mins before stopping.
Dust & vapours / Self, students visitors / Ensure tools are sharp, sand with oil where possible, use appropriate PPE (not a ‘disposable’ dust mask – but a half face close fitting mask with appropriate replaceable cartridge filters), use extraction when possible, ensure adequate ventilation
Mechanical injury from lathe / Self, students / Ensure tools are sharp, no loose clothing/hair, no watches/jewellery/gloves, use appropriate tools, keep fingers away from front of workpiece when lathe in forward motion.
Mechanical injury from non-power tools / Self, students / Ensure tools are sharp, use appropriate tools. Stow tools appropriately when not in use (reducing falling risk)
Mechanical injury from other power tools / Self, students / Ensure tools are sharp, use appropriate PPE, ensure appropriate training for each tool
Risk to students/visitors / Visitors, students / Ensure visitors do not enter when machinery is in operation, students to be briefed on safe working practice.
