UL presents the 17th Annual National Universities Debating Championship (NUDC) Tournament

The University of Limpopo Debate Society (ULDS) will host the 17th Annual National Universities Debating Championship (NUDC), Kgorong, from 5th to 11th July 2012 at the Turfloop Campus. The Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the University, Prof Mahlo Mokgalong, will officially open the ceremony on the 5th in the evening.

Aptly dubbed ‘Kgorong’, the tournament will resemble the royal court house where important members of society engage in an argument for or against an array of issues pertaining to the wellbeing of the greater African community, but with a special emphasis on the theme, “exploring new frontiers”. As the theme explains, each issue debated will be centred on how to develop the different sections of our home in order to make it a prominent and competitive candidate in the global arena while retaining our traditions and virtues as Africans.

The tournament has attracted interest from five Southern African Development Community (SADC) Universities i.e., Botswana, Namibia, Swaziland, Lesotho and Botswana Accountancy College and twenty-two South Africa universities will also participate, with UL being the host.

This debate championship is not only about competing, but also aimed at grooming and unearthing future leaders and greater speakers. Among South Africans who came through the ranks of the tournament are Eusibeus McKaiser, a political analyst, columnist and former Interface presenter; Nomfundo Mkhize of Ukhozi FM and Ngwanamogoto Kganyago, of Capricorn FM, among others.

Prof Mahlo Mokgalong thanks the NUDC for awarding the University the opportunity to coordinate the gathering of Africa’s future intellectual luminaries. “The University is eager to facilitate the outcomes of the tournament in July, largely because the founding concepts of debate – the arduous back and forth of how best to solve the prevalent problems that surround us – are in line with the University’s motto: ‘Finding solutions for Africa’”, he explains.
