Course Description: A general presentation of United States history, commencing with the European background and first discoveries. The pattern of exploration, settlement, and development of institutions is followed throughout the colonial period and the early national experience to Civil War era

Textbooks, supplies, & Other Resources:

The textbook for this class is Out of Many: A History of the American People, volume I, sixth edition, by John M. Faragher, etc. In addition, students are required to submit a book review and read other online resources that are available through the Blackboard external links.

Teaching Methods:

This will be a fun and challenging class. PowerPoint and multimedia will be used during lecture along with group discussions. Students are required to use Blackboard as a part of this class. Blackboard will have class updates, external links that are necessary for the two papers, and your grades. Discussion and debate in class is strongly encouraged. There are 10 quizzes that make up a student’s participation grade, five of which will be completed outside of class. There are four tests given, including the final. In addition, two written papers are required to pass this class.

Quizzes

There will be 10 quizzes that count as your participation grade. Five of these will be given as homework throughout the semester. They will be due at the START of the next class period. You cannot email them or drop them off in my box.

Book Review

You are required to submit a book review as your first paper. There are two books to choose from:

Shaara, Michael, The Killer Angels 1987, 384 pgs.

Ferling, John Adams vs. Jefferson: The Tumultuous Election of 1800 2005, 288 pgs.

The second book is available online through the library. The review must be at least 750 words. This paper needs to be submitted through SafeAssign.

Due: March 12th.

Research Paper;

Each student will write a research paper on a topic covered in class or in the textbook. The topic is your choice. The paper needs to be at least 1250 words, typed and double-spaced with 12-pt. font. As a research paper it must include four different sources and have a bibliography in an acceptable format such as MLA or Turabian. This Paper also needs to be submitted electronically through SafeAssign.

Due: April 28th.

Attendance:

Attendance is expected and is required for successful completion of this course. Excessive absence, more than six class periods, may lead to the instructor dropping the student from the class.

Late assignments and make-up work:

There are no Make-ups of quizzes. Make-up of tests is at the discretion of the instructor and the student must inform the instructor before the test starts. Papers may only be turned in late with documented reasons. Papers that are turned in late will be penalized by 10 points per day.

Course Withdrawal: The deadline to withdraw is April 10th. Contact the Counseling Office at any TCC campus to initiate withdrawal from a course ('W' grade) or to change from Credit to Audit. Students who stop participating in the course and fail to withdraw may receive a course grade of “F,” which may have financial aid consequences for the student.

Academic Dishonesty: Academic dishonesty (cheating) is defined as the deception of others about one’s own work or about the work of another. Academic dishonesty or misconduct is not condoned or tolerated at campuses within the Tulsa Community College system. Tulsa Community College adopts a policy delegating certain forms of authority for disciplinary action to the faculty. Such disciplinary actions delegated to the faculty include, but are not limited to, the dismissal of disrespectful or disorderly students from classes. In the case of academic dishonesty a faculty member may:

·  Require the student to redo an assignment or test, or require the student to complete a substitute assignment or test;

·  Record a "zero" for the assignment or test in question;

·  Recommend to the student that the student withdraw from the class, or administratively withdraw the student from the class;

·  Record a grade of "F" for the student at the end of the semester. Faculty may request that disciplinary action be taken against a student at the administrative level by submitting such a request to the Dean of Student Services.

If you plagiarize on your paper or use your cell phone on a test you will be given a zero for that assignment/test.
