Tulikivi Introduces New Custom Options

Man has been building fire for nearly 500,000 years. Since then, fire has been at the heart of our homes, if not the heart of our existence, and endless kinds of fireplaces, as individual as the homeowner, have been created. Tulikivi, maker of soapstone fireplaces, understands the need to embellish the hearth and is expanding their line with customizing options that include new choices in decorative details and new soapstone colors.

Picture Tiles

One way to individualize a standard Tulikivi model is with a sandblasted pictorial tile inset. Now available are eighteen designs in relief, which can be incorporated into any fireplace model. The 12 x 12 tiles ($300) each have a nature theme and include birds in flight, scenics, fruits, flowers and leaf motifs. Also being introduced are intarsia tiles, handset in India with semi-precious stones, which provide a note of color and elegant detailing to the fireplace façade. There are six designs, each again based on a nature theme. Intarsia tiles, also 12 x 12, are $400. According to Heikki Vauhkonen, U.S marketing director of the Finnish company, customizing a Tulikivi fireplace is an increasingly common request. “Tulikivi fireplaces are unique to begin with and there seems to be a natural penchant for adding one’s own touch. That gave us the idea to offer tiles as a ready-to-go customizing option.”

Custom Design

The easiest way to customize a Tulikivi is by changing the size, says Vauhkonen. Tulikivi has long accommodated customer requests to craft a model to special dimensions. Also popular is an adding a soapstone bench, which gently heats up from the warmth of the fireplace.

For those who want to truly design their own masterpiece, Tulikivi carvers are at their service or dealers here will make arrangements with local craftspeople to meet a client’s own design requests. This can range from a sculptured detail to the overall style of the fireplace. Perhaps, the great testament to the possibilities is what’s now known as the “Boulder” model. Looking like a giant rock that has landed in the middle of a room, it is, however, a highly engineered fireplace, which will radiate gentle heat for hours after a single two-hour fire. “It’s proof that we can design just about anything a client wants.”

New Colors

In addition to the decorative options, Tulikivi also introduces two new stone colors, Kianta Blue and Kianta Sky, each from quarries Tulikivi owns in northern Finland, where it is headquartered. Kianta Blue has pronounced white veins and a slight blue tint. Kianta Sky is a very light grey with a cloudlike surface look from the soft allover veining. Most models are available in Kianta Sky, Kianta Blue as well as classic Tulikivi soapstone. Tulikivi is the world’s largest quarrier of soapstone and crafts fireplaces at its headquarters in Juuka, Finland, for distribution all over the world. Soapstone fireplaces are recognized as the most efficient form of fireplace heating there is.
