TUC YOUNG WORKERS’ CONFERENCE 2014

The 2014 Young Workers’ Conference (YWC) will take place on Saturday 22nd and Sunday 23rd March 2014 at the TUC.

Nomination of Delegates

Delegates must be under 27 years of age on 22nd March 2014. Please use the attached form to nominate delegates. Members of the TUC Young Workers’ Forum who are over the age of 27 at the time of the conference can attend under the terms of Rule 6 of the TUC Young Workers’ Forum Constitution.

The number of delegates per affiliate is set out below. Affiliates are asked to ensure that as far as possible delegations contain a gender balance.

  • Unions with up to 300,000 members, a maximum of 4 delegates;
  • Unions with up to 500,000 members, a maximum of 6 delegates;
  • Unions with up to 800,000 members, a maximum of 8 delegates;
  • Unions with up to 1,200,000 members, a maximum of 12 delegates;
  • Unions with up to 1,500,000 members, a maximum of 14 delegates;
  • Unions with up to 1,800,000 members, a maximum of 16 delegates;

Delegate nomination forms must be returned by Friday 21st February 2014 to Karina Ross, TUC, OSD, Congress House, Great Russell Street, London WC1B 3LS. Please mark envelope “YWC Delegates”.

Timetable for submission of Motions and Emergency Motions

Unions are invited to submit ONE motion not exceeding 250 words for discussion at the Young Workers’ Conference. Motion and relevant nomination forms are attached. Key dates for the receipt and distribution of motions and amendments are:

  • Friday 10th January 2014 – deadline for receipt of motions
  • w/b Monday 13th January 2014 – motions distributed to unions
  • Friday 7th February 2014 – deadline for receipt of amendments
  • Friday 21st February 2014 – deadline for nominations for Young Workers’ Forum Vice-Chair
  • Friday 28th February 2014 – deadline for final agenda to reach unions
  • Wednesday 19th March 2014 – deadline for emergency motions

Accommodation

Accommodation will be booked for delegates at The St Giles Hotel, Bedford Avenue, London WC1B 3GH for the night of Saturday 22nd March 2014. Those who require accommodation must let the TUC know by Friday 21st February 2014. Members of the TUC Young Workers’ Forum attending the pre-conference forum meeting (date/time tbc) may also request accommodation for Friday 21st March – this will be covered by the TUC. Please notify the TUC by Friday 21st February 2014.

Fees

There will be no delegation fee for attendance at the Conference, but accommodation fees (including lunch and evening meal on Saturday and lunch on Sunday) will be £150 for the entire weekend. Payment should accompany the delegate nomination form. This only applies to delegates who require overnight accommodation.

Saturday Evening Reception

There will be a conference reception for delegates on the Saturday evening at Congress House. Further details will be circulated nearer the time of Conference.

TUC Young Workers Campaign Award

The 2014 Young Workers’ Conference will for the first time present the TUC Young Workers Campaign Award. This award is intended to showcase innovative and effective campaigning by unions in relation to the recruitment of young workers into unions and issues of concern to young workers. The shortlisted nominees will be invited to the Conference to give a presentation.

Full details of the Award, nominations and short listing process will be in the November issue of TUC mail.

Welcome reception and briefing for Women delegates and visitors

Also this year, the Young Workers Forum will be organising a welcome reception and briefing for women delegates. The meeting will be hosted by Fern McCaffrey, Chair of the Young Workers Forum, and Scarlet Harris, TUC Women’s Officer, and will give women delegates and visitors the chance to discuss the TUC’s work on women as well as women and activism in trade unions.

If any of your union delegates or visitors would like to attend this event, please indicate on the delegate nomination form. The meeting will start at 11am on Saturday 22nd March 2014.

Childcare Facilities

Childcare facilities can be provided for children of delegates during the Conference. Qualified staff will run these facilities. Those who wish to use these facilities should inform the TUC by Friday 24th January 2014.

Facilities for People with Disabilities

If any of your delegates require facilities for people with disabilities, it would assist the TUC if you noted this on the appropriate section of the delegate nomination form.

Dietary Requirements

If any of your delegates have any dietary requirements, it would assist the TUC if you noted this on the appropriate section of the delegate nomination form.
