Holiday Homework

Class VII

Dear Parents,

Summer vacation provides an opportunity to the student to pursue hobbies and interests with greater involvement. It is the ideal time to blend both leaning and recreation by organizing family visits to places like National Science Centre*, British Council Library, Lalit Kala Academy, art galleries at India Habitat Centre etc. Children are greatly benefitted by the wonderful educational opportunities these places offer. Some of these organizations offer membership to innovative educational programmes at nominal cost. Your child may become an individual member of a programme that catches his/ her interest.

The home work for summer vacation has been designed keeping in mind that the student may be able to do it independently with some parental guidance. We aim to develop skills of problem solving and critical thinking through the assigned tasks. You will therefore notice students are encouraged to pursue each challenging task and come to a logical conclusion. This originality and creativity will be appreciated during evaluation.

SCIENCE

Theme: Transport

In Delhi, personal vehicles – cars and two wheelers – use up more than 75 percent of the road space but meet only 20 percent of the commuting demand. But buses that use less than 5 percent of the road space, meet more than 60 percent of the demand.

Public transport system means lesser congestion and faster speeds. Investment in public transport also boosts the economy.

Do your parents own a vehicle – car or two-wheeler? What about your neighbours? Conduct the survey for minimum 6 families, which includes 3 families with car(s) and 3 families with two-wheelers. Your survey should include the following points-

 How many members are there in the family?

 Mention the name of the head of the family and the address.

 Do they use public transport regularly? If yes what is the mode of transport?

 How many vehicles do they have? Specify the number of two wheelers and four-wheelers.

Collect the following information for each vehicle in the family:

  • Name of the vehicle –
  • Type of the fuel used – petrol/ diesel/ CNG/ electricity/ any other.
  • Mileage of the vehicle (in km/ litre) –
  • Approximate distance covered by the vehicle in a month –
  • Total fuel consumption (in litres) =
  • Cost of the fuel per litre -
  • Monthly cost of the fuel required

= Cost of the fuel per litre ×no. of litres required in a month

 Tabulate the data as follows.

S. no / Name of
the vehicle / Type of the
fuel used / Mileage of
the vehicle
(km/ litre) / Distance covered
(km) / Total fuel
Consumption
(litre) / Cost of the
fuel per litre / Monthly cost of the fuel
1.
2.

 Calculate the monthly cost of the fuel required for all the vehicles in the family.

 If they have a driver than what is his monthly wage?

 Do they pay any EMI for the vehicle? If yes, how much is the amount?

 Do they pay any parking charges for their vehicles?

 Calculate the total expenses made by the family on transportation by adding the total monthly cost of the fuel, driver’s monthly wage, parking charges, and EMI of the car (if there is any).

 Conduct the similar survey for 5 more families.

 Calculate the monthly expenses per person for each family-

Monthly expenses per person =

 Plot a graph to represent the monthly expense per person for each family.

Topic – Devotional Paths To The Divine

Name of Activity – Scrapbook

Learning Objective-To promote sensitivity and understanding of religious perspectives through interaction with a religious tradition.

Description of the homework – Different people show their devotion to God in different ways. Some of them perform rituals, some sing bhajans, kirtans or qawwalis, and some are filled with tears when they repeat the name of God in silence. These forms of devotion towards God are the foundation of various kinds of devotional movements that have evolved since the 8th century.

Different religions and means of devotions are different paths to the same God. Therefore, all religions should be respected.
