Job Purpose

Perform various material handling duties and pre-stage dies to maintain work schedules, safety and productivity and facilitate maximum punch press running time.

Duties and Responsibilities

1. Ensure that each punch press operator has adequate steel and storage tanks to minimize machine downtime due to lack of materials or space; be aware of which machines will be running by referring to Kan-Ban cards.

2. Manually or with pull cart or forklift, locate and move steel, parts, tanks and other materials to or from Punch Press area.

3. Pre-stage dies in presses by using forklift to position die on press, must prioritize tasks because of simultaneous set-ups.

4. Transport finished goods to scale, complete inventory card and verify part number is correct, bring empty tank back to Punch Press.

5. Ensure accuracy of inventory information regarding raw material status by maintaining transactions of all moves on computer system.

6. Maintain steel supply by stacking supply correctly and safely.

7. Adjust and operate hoist and coil straightener in a safe manner in transporting and straightening steel.

8. Assist Lead in loading scrap; separates stainless steel from aluminum.

9. Assist Machine Operators with degreasing process as necessary.

10. May move and appropriately store chemicals or hazardous waste materials in area.

11. Keep forklift operating properly by recharging battery as necessary.

12. Maintain safe operation of hoist and chains by visually inspecting for problems.

13. Keep Punch Press area clean and orderly to facilitate production and minimize safety hazards.

14. Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received

The incumbent receives general supervision, only exceptional problems are referred to the supervisor. Assignments are usually specific and the incumbent selects form a variety of established procedures to complete tasks.

Problem Solving and Decision Making

The incumbent must organize and prioritize daily tasks, often to accommodate simultaneous press set-ups. Decisions must often be made quickly. Determines which press will receive materials first and at what time press will be shut down to load steel.

Relations with Others

The incumbent works closely with the Punch Press Lead in a team effort and interacts with other members of the department as well as the Tool Room, Plating Shipping and Production and Inventory Control personnel. The incumbent may participate in small group activities such as Quality Circles, task teams, safety meetings and other improvement efforts.

Equipment Operated

Raymond forklift, banding equipment, hoists and chains, straightener, feeder, scale, hand tools such as wrenches and nibblers, calculator, computer, micrometer and calipers. Moderate care required to prevent damage to dies, production equipment and forklifts.

Working Conditions and Hazards

Exposed to possible injuries involving more serious cuts, strains etc., which might result in lost time. Continuous noise and occasional oil fumes in air. Uniform safety practices consist of safety glasses, safety shoes, safety hats, earmuffs and other devices as required.

Physical Effort Required

Occasional lifting of 50 pounds, and pushing/pulling of 100 pounds or more. Must have strong hands and arms and a good sense of balance for leaning in forklift to position dies.

Learning Period

To learn the very basic duties of this position would take approximately two weeks. To handle all aspects of the job with minimum supervision would take twelve months or more.

Qualifications

Skills and Abilities: Organize tasks and make decisions quickly. Basic skills are needed to figure weight discrepancies, measure and weigh steel and calculate steel by piece counts.

Training and Experience: Forklift license is necessary. Previous work in area would be helpful to provide knowledge of work flow.
