Location

We are camping in dispersed but developed (with fire rings) Forest Service camp sites along County Road 18, southwest of the town of Fairplay. The camp area is at about 10,600 feet in elevation, so warm clothing for morning, evenings, and sleeping is important.

Regional Map (Source: http://maps.google.com/ )

As can be seen in the following map, we will have nearby access to potable water and vault toilets.

Weather

Historic weather averages show highs in the 60’s and lows in the 30’s during mid-August, however, record temps show highs in the mid-80’s and lows in the low-20 degree range. Precipitation is common in the afternoons in this area, and August is the second wettest month of the year.

We will be hiking 14ers from a parking lot at Kite Lake Campground. Weather on the fourteeners can be cold, windy, and can change rapidly, so all scouts should have their 10 essentials, including 2 water bottles, fleece hat, shirt and gloves, good rain gear and solid boots for hiking. Travel Plan

We will meet at PUMC at 16:00 on Friday. Travel will be by private vehicle to the more primitive, dispersed campsites immediately adjacent to Horseshoe Campground on the north side of CR 18. There will be a roll call and vehicle checkout at the church. Cars will be checked in at the parking area and a final roll call will be made at camp before dark. We will be pulling the small troop trailer. As always, Scouts and Adult Leaders will travel in Class A Uniforms to and from the event.

The actual drive time is estimated at 2:30 – 2:45, depending on traffic.

Getting There

Below is the preferred route to camp on Friday night.

Rest stops: There are several possible rest stops along the way. A gas station at Bailey presents a nice mid-way rest stop. Gas stations in Fairplay and Alma are the nearest gas stations to camp and trailhead, respectively.

Driver cautions: None.

Saturday Travel

On Saturday, we will travel from camp to the trailhead. Parking for the trailhead is at Kite Lake Campground. To get there, we will follow the following directions:

There is a $3.00 per vehicle parking fee at the trailhead, so drivers should bring exact change.

Return Trip

We will pack up and leave camp Sunday morning at approximately 9:30 am. We should arrive back at the church around 12:00 pm. There will be a roll call and car checkout at the parking area. Scouts will need to be checked out at the church before leaving.

Emergency Plan

In the event of an emergency, the course of action will be dictated by the geographical location it occurs at.

·  Driving between Parker and Jefferson within cell phone coverage, call 911 or *CSP (Colo State Patrol) and follow their directions.

·  Outside of cell phone coverage during travel to and from the camp, request assistance from passing motorists to contact Highway Patrol or local police/fire/ambulance. If not available, return to the first area of cell phone coverage to contact 911: Verizon reports full digital coverage along most of Hwy 285 and along Hwy 9, including at camp and on the mountain, though I doubt the accuracy of this; AT&T reports limited coverage along Hwy 285, at Fairplay and along Hwy 9; Sprint reports roaming coverage along Hwy 285 and along Hwy 9 and in camp; and T-Mobile reports roaming coverage along Hwy 285, CR 18 and along Hwy 9. There is no coverage at Kite Lake or on the 14ers to my knowledge. (Sources: http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/CoverageLocatorController?requesttype=NEWREQUEST/; http://coverage.sprint.com/IMPACT.jsp?language=EN; http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/; http://www.t-mobile.com/coverage/pcc.aspx ).

·  Friday Night: Return to cars and drive to nearest cell service.

·  Saturday Hike: Use radios to request help or return to Parking Lot and cars and drive to nearest cell service.

·  Sunday: Return to cars and drive to nearest cell service.

·  There is no risk of forest fire for our 14er climb, since the trails are above treeline and sparsely vegetated.

Local Emergency Contact

In the event of an emergency, Karla Abell will be notified and will contact necessary parties.

Evacuation

Radios will be issued to key adult leaders, acting SPL, and group scout leaders.

In the event an evacuation becomes necessary, there is one preferred exit route:

·  Return to car and travel back to Alma/Fairplay to contact emergency personnel.

·  As an alternate, troop can drive N on Hwy 9 into Breckenridge, where there is a medical facility.

PUMC will be the rendezvous point for all evacuations, unless an alternate site is designated by the Camp Host on Evacuation Orders. Roll call will be taken to ensure the safe return of all boys.
