RESIDENCE HALL ACTIVITY COORDINATOR

SUMMER ONLY

SALARY: $3,560 for the 44.5 program days June 25 through August 13, 2016. Must be available for the entire term of the summer program.

The TRiO Upward Bound program is a federally funded grant from the U.S. Department of Education for $469,765which covers 100% of the program costs. This year-round program provides academic support, college preparation, career awareness, and other support services to low-income and potential first-generation college students. It is designed to help students become more successful in high school and prepare to enter and successfully complete postsecondary education. The program works with the following five target high schools within Central Washington: Moses Lake, Warden, Othello, Royal, and Lake Roosevelt High School in Grand Coulee.

For six weeks, TRiO Upward Bound operates an intensive residential summer academy for 56 students on the BBCC campus. Students participate in high school or college classes and tutorial sessions during the day, including organized recreation and enrichment activities in the evening. The program also offers day trips, tours, and weekend field trips designed to promote personal and social growth. Big Bend Community College is designated a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI).

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the supervision of the Program Director & Residence Hall Director, the Activity Coordinator will:

1.Assume responsibility for planning, organizing and facilitating all evening and weekend activities.

2.Assist in managing residence hall office including organization, desk operations, handling student concerns & office coverage.

3. Assist Program Director & Hall Director in the orientation and training of residence hall staff.

4.Supervise hall staff & students during the absence of the Hall Director.

5.Live in the residence hall, supervise students and enforce program rules.

6.Exemplify a positive and mature role model for the TRiO Upward Bound students.

7.Provide academic tutoring and personal guidance to students.

8.Provide individual and small group supervision as assigned.

9.Work 6 days a week (including some weekends); daily work schedule will vary based on program needs.

10.Drive a college van as required for program activities.

11.Maintain appropriate administrative office and student records.

12.Attend and co-lead daily staff meetings.

13.Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1.Three years of college completed after high school graduation (including Running-Start)

2.Valid driver's license and proof of insurance

3.Sensitive to the backgrounds of culturally diverse high school students

4.Excellent communication (verbal and written) and organizational skills

5.Creative and self-motivated individual with demonstrated leadership skills

6.Ability to handle multiple assignments and conflicting demands & priorities

7.Employment is contingent upon favorable background check through the Washington State Patrol

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Residence life and recreation experience
  • Experience working with teenagers and/or disadvantaged populations
  • Bilingual fluency, especially in Spanish
  • Demonstrated bicultural experience

If selected for an interview the following are required:

  • A current driver’s abstract (may be obtained from the Dept. of Licensing-$13 fee)
  • Driver’s license & proof of car insurance verifying coverage to drive another person’s vehicle
  • Sign a background check through the Washington State Patrol
