Mission Statement: We are a fellowship of believers in Christ, sustained by

God’s Word, led by the Holy Spirit and committed to God’s vision of caring.

Dear Trinity Members & Friends,

Peaceful greetings.

At the January 20th Annual Congregational Meeting a decision was made that will dramatically affect our congregational life and ministry for the foreseeable future. With the impending retirement of our Christian Education and Youth Director this coming June, we are faced with the question of what will we do with this staff vacancy? The decision was made to pursue the possibility of a Seminary Intern.

Seminary is a four-year post-college graduate program. (Most seminary students are preparing to become pastors.) The third of the four years is spent in a congregation applying classroom learning and experiencing genuine real-life congregational activities. This has benefits for both the student intern and the congregation.

The intern, of course, experiences daily congregational life and is given opportunities to work with a supervising pastor, congregational leaders, and meeting the members of the congregation. The congregation benefits from the unique skills, ability and training of the intern. Congregations that are veterans of the internship program often have a sense of contributing to the further education and training of a future leader of the Church. And further, under the guidance of an intern supervisory committee, the intern will plan, develop and administer a special educational project and present it for evaluation at its conclusion.

The challenge for us as a congregation is two-fold. First, the cost is anticipated to be at least $7,500 more than has previously been allotted in our annual budget for our Christian Education and Youth Director. This cost is but a minor concern as we are all aware that Trinity can well-afford anything that we genuinely desire. But, it will require that we all examine our personal giving discipline and seek ways to increase our giving. (It is not fair to invite an intern, or any staff person, to come on board and then not support them properly.)

The second concern, I think, is of greater concern. And that is the realization that, in order for this experiment to work, we will all need to take a more active role in the life and activities of our Council and standing committees and organizations. Our intern will be working most closely with our Family Faith Formation Team (formerly called our Christian Education & Youth Committee). But they will also be working with our four other standing committees – Worship & Music, Stewardship & Finance, Premises, and Life & Missions. All of these committees meet once a month (and as needed) to plan and oversee the many activities that take place at Trinity. All of these committees need the skills and participation of many, many members of the congregation – not just those whom we have elected to our Council. You do not need to be a member of the Church Council to serve on a standing committee. Please consider your interests and then choose a committee of which to be a part. Councilors and Committees are listed each month in this parish newsletter with meeting times and chairpersons identified by an asterisk (*). Please give your Councilors a call and tell them you are interested in being a part of that committee. The Chairperson will enthusiastically welcome your participation.

I will close with the words that I shared in Sunday’s sermon (January 27th): Why do we do all these things? Why is TrinityLutheranChurch here? What difference do we make by being here? Jesus set forth his mission that day in the synagogue (see St. Luke 4). We are part of Jesus’ agenda, his mission and ministry. We are part of Jesus’ purpose, carrying on what our Lord himself is doing: Committing ourselves to God’s vision of caring … for his Church, his creation, his people. We now have an opportunity before us! For including us in that vision, we can in all joy say: Thanks be to God! Amen.

Joy & Peace,

s/ Pr. Curtis Zieske

MountKatoFamily Snow Day is Sunday, February 10

Let’s go to MountKato for our Snow Day. You decide what you want to do. You can ski, snow board or snow tube. Pick only one. You can’t change your mind once you get there. Skiing and snow boarding cost $13.00. Snow tubing for 3 hours cost $8.00. You must be 42 inches tall to snow tube. Everyone gets to go at group rates and at ½ prices because of the money you get for helping with Lent Soup Suppers! The bus will leave from the parking lot at 12:00 PM and return around 5:00 PM. Skiers & snow boarders may drive themselves if you want more time in the snow. We need 15 skiers/boarders and 10 tubers to get the group rates!!

Ash Wednesday is February 13! It marks the beginning of our Lenten journey to Easter. It also means the beginning of our Soup Suppers. Look for the Lenten Schedule in this newsletter to learn when it is your turn to help with the suppers. Remember this is a youth fundraiser to keep the cost of our youth activities affordable! Like…the cost of the Family Snow Day!
