Readings & Hymns

Processional hymn:

Saint Luke, beloved physician,

With honour now recall,

Who served his Master's mission,

Who ministered to Paul;

Whose skill to distant ages

Bequeathed a gift unpriced,

A gospel in whose pages

We see the face of Christ.

He tells for us the stories

Of Jesus here on earth,

The unsung pains and glories

That marked the church's birth;

The Spirit's power in preaching,

The contrite sinner freed,

The grace and mercy reaching

Our deepest human need.

For all who work at healing

We lift our hearts in prayer,

The love of God revealing

In science, skill and care:

His gifts be still imparted

To those who make us whole,

Like Luke the tender-hearted,

Physician of the soul.

Collect

Almighty God, you called Luke the physician, whose praise is in the gospel, to be an evangelist and physician of the soul: by the grace of the Spirit and through the wholesome medicine of the gospel, give your Church the same love and power to heal; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen

old testament reading

Isaiah 35: 3-6
A reading from the book of the prophet Isaiah.

3 Strengthen the weak hands, and make firm the feeble knees.
4 Say to those who are of a fearful heart, "Be strong, do not fear! Here is your God. He will come with vengeance, with terrible recompense. He will come and save you."
5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped;
6 then the lame shall leap like a deer, and the tongue of the speechless sing for joy. For waters shall break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert;

This is the word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Psalm147

R It is good to sing praises to our God.

Praise the LORD! How good it is to sing praises to our God; for he is gracious, and a song of praise is fitting.The LORD builds up Jerusalem; he gathers the outcastsofIsrael.He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds.R

He determines the number of the stars; he gives to all of them their names.Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.R

The LORD lifts up the downtrodden; he casts the wicked to the ground.
Sing to the LORD with thanksgiving; make melody to our God on the lyre.R

new testament Reading

2 Timothy 4: 5-17

A reading from the second letterof Paul to Timothy.

5 As for you, always be sober, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, carry out your ministry fully.

6As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come.

7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.

8 From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

9Do your best to come to me soon,

10 for Demas, in love with this present world, has deserted me and gone to Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to Galatia,Titus to Dalmatia.

11 Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, for he is useful in my ministry.

12 I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

13 When you come, bring the cloak that I left with Carpus at Troas, also the books, and above all the parchments.

14 Alexander the coppersmith did me great harm; the Lord will pay him back for his deeds.

15 You also must beware of him, for he strongly opposed our message.

16 At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them!

17 But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth.

This is the word of the Lord

Thanks be to God

Gradual Hymn:

Fight the good fight with all thy might;
Christ is thy Strength, and Christ thy

right;
Lay hold on life, and it shall be
Thy joy and crown eternally.

Run the straight race through God’s

good grace,
Lift up thine eyes, and seek His face;
Life with its way before us lies,
Christ is the Path, and Christ the Prize.

Cast care aside, lean on thy Guide,
His boundless mercy will provide;

Trust, and thy trusting soul shall prove
Christ is its Life, and Christ its Love.

Faint not nor fear, His arms are near,
He changeth not, and thou art dear.
Only believe, and thou shalt see
That Christ is all in all to thee.

By J. S. B. Monsell (1811-75)

Gospel Reading

Luke 10:1-9

Alleluia, alleluia.

My sheep hear my voice, says the Lord.
I know them, and they follow me.

Alleluia.

The Lord be with you

And also with you

Hear the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

Glory to you O Lord

1 After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go.

2 He said to them, "The harvest is plentiful, but the labourers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out labourers into his harvest.
3 Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves.
4 Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road.
5 Whatever house you enter, first say, 'Peace to this house!'
6 And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you.
7 Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house.
8 Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you;

9 cure the sick who are there, and say to them, 'The kingdom of God has come near to you.'

This is the Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you, O Christ

Offertory Hymn:

Will you come and follow me
If I but call your name?
Will you go where you don’t know
And never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown,
Will you let my love be known,
Will you let my life be grown
In you and you in me?

Will you leave yourself behind
If I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind
And never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare
Should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer
In you and you in me?

Will you let the blinded see
If I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free
And never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean
And do such as this unseen,
And admit to what I mean
In you and you in me?

Will you love the ‘you’ you hide
If I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside
And never be the same?
Will you use the faith you’ve found
To reshape the world around
Through my sight and touch and sound
In you and you in me?

Lord, your summons echoes true
When you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you
And never be the same.
In your company I’ll go
Where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I’ll move and live and grow
In you and you in me.

Graham Maule (b. 1958)

Communion Hymn:

Teach me Thy way, O Lord,

Teach me Thy way!
Thy gracious aid afford,

Teach me Thy way!
Help me to walk aright,

More by faith, less by sight;
Lead me with heav’nly light,

Teach me Thy way!

When doubts and fears arise,

Teach me Thy way!
When storms o’erspread the skies, Teach me Thy way!
Shine through the cloud and rain, Through sorrow, toil and pain;
Make Thou my pathway plain,

Teach me Thy way!

Long as my life shall last,

teach me Thy way!
Where’er my lot be cast,

teach me Thy way!
Until the race is run,

until the journey’s done,
Until the crown is won,

teach me Thy way!

By Benjamin Mansell Ramsey(1849-1923)

Post communion Prayer

Lord God, the source of truth and love, keep us faithful to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, united in prayer and the breaking of bread, and one in joy and simplicity of heart, in Jesus Christ our Lord.Amen

Recessional Hymn:

We have a gospel to proclaim
Good news for men in all the earth;
The gospel of a Saviour’s name:
We sing His glory, tell His worth.

Tell of His birth at Bethlehem,
Not in a royal house or hall
But in a stable dark and dim:
The Word made flesh, a light for all.

Tell of His death at Calvary,
Hated by those He came to save;
In lonely suffering on the cross
For all He loved His life He gave.

Tell of that glorious Easter morn:
Empty the tomb, for He was free.
He broke the power of death and hell
That we might share His victory.

Tell of His reign at God’s right hand,
By all creation glorified;
He sends His Spirit on His Church
To live for Him, the Lamb who died.

Now we rejoice to name Him King:
Jesus is Lord of all the earth.
This gospel message we proclaim:
We sing His glory, tell His worth.
