Overview of Mamu Health Service Limited
Established in 1990, Mamu Health Service Limited is a community controlled health organisation providing comprehensive Primary Health Care to Innisfail and surrounding districts including Ravenshoe, Croydon and Chillagoe. Mamu Health Service Limited operates from the following locations:
10 Ernest Street Innisfail, 11 Ernest Street Innisfail, 20 Owen Street Innisfail, 12b Owen Street Innisfail, 91 Munro Street Babinda, 8 Watkins Street Tully, 41 Grigg Street Ravenshoe
Position Purpose
The purpose of this position is responsible for providing clinical care and comprehensive Primary Health Care, and provision of quality and culturally appropriate nursing services to the community
Position Duties
Performance Area / Responsibility/Task
Clinical / Health Care /
  • Provide appropriate registered nurse level care to clients attending Mamu Health Service Limited clinics. These may include but are not limited to:
  • Triage – Telephone/ Front Desk / Treatment room
  • Identify and assess and manage the urgent need of clients, including emergency treatment
  • Therapeutic care and treatment
  • Wound management and dressings
  • Venipuncture’s
  • Diagnostic services
  • Clinical data management
  • Home visiting support
  • Client advocacy
  • Client recall
  • Chronic disease management
  • Immunization
  • Excisions
  • Perform nursing and clinical procedures competently, in accordance with qualifications
  • Day to day support of the clinical activities of Health Workers when required
  • Assist with the implementation of strategies aimed at increasing the uptake of Medicare Enhanced Primary Care (EPC) Items
  • Continually modifying and improving our procedures and written policies in accordance with the most recent evidence and guidelines and adopting a risk management approach when implementing infection control measures
  • Ensuring the timely dissemination of information concerning changes to infection control procedures or information about national and local infection control outbreaks
  • Ensure all primary health care programs maximise Medicare billings to meet financial targets
  • “Cold Chain” maintenance of vaccines and vaccination policies
  • Ensure maintenance of safe effective medical stock control systems, including the storage and dispensing of pharmaceuticals in accordance with Accreditation standards and internal and external protocols.
  • Ensure that all medical equipment is maintained in safe working order through regular servicing arrangements.
  • Participate in specific child and maternal initiatives, including the uptake of child health checks
  • Participate in and support the delivery of child health screening and immunisation services
  • Work within a multidisciplinary team to support the provision of safe, effective health counselling and primary health care to women, men and their families

Communication /
  • Conduct all face to face and telephone contact with patients in a friendly, professional manner at all times
  • Maintain a harmonious and co-operative relationship with work colleagues and clients
  • Contribute to the efficient and effective functioning of the workplace in order to meet organizational objectives

Teamwork /
  • Actively participate in compulsory staff meetings

  • Be able to work in any location with our service area when required

Health Promotion /
  • Support the planning, implementation and evaluation of group activities
  • Provide and support health promotion programs through local networks
  • Comply with legislation, policies, procedures and protocols to achieve and maintain evidence based and effective practice in primary health care with a focus on promotion, prevention and early identification

Information Management /
  • Ensure the accurate collecting and recording of patient demographics in the patient information system
  • Maintain accurate recording of client records
  • Operate a computerized appointment system
  • Gather and record statistical data relevant to measuring performance against agreed indicators and participate in review and evaluation activities

Relationship Management /
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal staff
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with other Community Controlled Health Organisations in the region
  • Develop and maintain effective collaborative partnerships and strategic alliances with key external stakeholders in particular other service providers

Human Resources /
  • Participate in an Annual Performance Review
  • Participate in relevant training and professional development activities required for the position
  • Comply with all MHSL Policies and Procedures

Quality, Risk and Compliance, WH&S /
  • Address WH & S hazards, near misses, incidents and injuries and adhere to infection control processes
  • Recognise your responsibility and ensure the health, safety and wellbeing of yourself, colleagues and clients
  • Compliance and participate (when required) with standards, policies and procedures, legislation and guidelines
  • Observe any lawful instructions regarding health and safety
  • Identify and make recommendations to improve processes, quality and service delivery outcomes
  • Contribute as required to maintenance of AGPAL accreditation status and reaccreditation process where required
  • Contribute as required to maintenance of ISO:9001 accreditation status and reaccreditation process where required
  • Ensure Quality Assurance parameters is maintained at all times
  • Use of Continual Improvement Register located in the Quality Co-coordinator Software Program

Selection Criteria
Qualifications and Registrations
SC 1 / Bachelor of Nursing
(The Registered Nurse must have current registration with the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency and continual maintenance of such registration and must haveImmunization Endorsement )
SC 2 / Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures including
-An understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in contemporary society and
-the ability to communicate effectively and credibly with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander views are incorporated into health service planning/development and implementation
SC 3 / Ability to provide effective strategic leadership and management of comprehensive primary health care services, including human, financial, and physical resources of a health service
SC 4 / Understanding of Medicare and Australian government health legislation and policy
SC 5 / Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with external peers and stakeholders from various backgrounds and levels
SC 6 / Demonstrated understanding and commitment to the principles of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service and the concept of Comprehensive Primary Health Care

  • Current QLD Drivers licence is required
  • Ability to travel within the geographic service area

  • Current First Aid Certificate or ability to obtain one
