Broadcast news—Seneca Scout Weekly edition

CLASS OBJECTIVES

We have the responsibility to report the news.We will also produce videos and write segments that cover all news elements related to our district and our surrounding communities.

Our news should reach out to everyone in some small way, centering on the local news aspect. This will draw in more viewers while allowing you, the reporters, to focus on getting interviews and news footage from around the area.

Keys to Success in this class:

  1. BE PROFESSIONAL: Our productionshould be professional and technically sound, and stories should follow journalism ethics and guidelines.
  2. BE PROUD: We will strive to make our programming a symbol of what a school community should be: a dynamic environment for learning and growing. Our job is to report the good and the not-so-good, and we will do so in an educational and professional manner.
  3. BE ON TASK: You are absolutely not here to just hang out, play games, sleep, walk around the halls aimlessly with a camera, or do work for other classes!
  4. Be a team: Everyone’s contributions will make our success possible. You will get to know each other very well. You will offer suggestions on news stories, critique work, and bring interesting ideas to the table. Participation is essential! Many of you are on the newspaper staff, in sports, band, JROTC, or other clubs that require you to work hard and perform for the community in one way or another. This class is not much different from that. You should be prepared to work hard, put in extra hours, and meet all of your deadlines, so the audience sees the best product possible.

Our class will follow a VERYhectic schedule. We will produce a weekly broadcast, working throughout the week to write and film stories and prepare for that week’s show. Everyone is responsible for completing their assigned story ALONG WITH handling their assigned task in the studio for the show’s recording.

GRADING: Grading for this class will occur at different times throughout the 9 week periods depending on your individual schedule, with most grades coming near the end of the 9 weeks. You will be graded on your performance and videos at the halfway point of the 9 weeks and again at the end. As previously stated, this class has a hectic structure, so if you have questions about grades at any time, please ask. Please see attached rubrics describing how you will be graded.

This assignment will help me create a working schedule for the week, and we will begin to see how you all will develop as a group.

JOB DESCRIPTIONS

PRODUCING

  • Your job is to control / produce the entire daily show and its segments for the upcoming week. Make sure that timings are correct, schedules are accurate, equipment is in order, and deadlines are being met by your peers. You may need to produce “filler” pieces with a very quick turn-around time.
  • You’ll need to organize the script for the week; write effective transitions, decide what stories lead, what wraps up the show, and where does everything go in-between
  • It is likely that you will share this duty with another student during your week. Who would you like to work with? How will each of you share and divide the responsibilities?
  • You will also share directing duties with your co-producer(s). You will manage the show—calling switches between cameras, giving directions, providing countdowns, framing, coaching your crew.
  • You should not plan this when you have other major deadlines (in this class or outside of this class).
  • SEE RUBRIC at THE END OF THIS PACKET.
  • For the treatment: discuss WHEN you would like to be the producer (give me a specific week). If this is not possible, at least provide a date when you know you CAN’T do it.

ANCHORING

  • Nobody is required to anchor, butyou are all welcome to as long as you take it seriously and are appropriate.
  • Anchoring for the whole semester will count for 100 points. If you choose not to anchor, your 2nd video evaluation for the 9 weeks will count for 100 points instead of 50.
  • See RUBRIC at the end of this packet.
  • Tell me which week or weeks you’d like to anchor if you have a preference.
