Travel Team Head Coach Expectations

The head coach of a youth basketball team is the established leader for that group of boys or girls. He or she plays a critical role in teaching important developmental

lessons beyond the X’s and O’s of the sport. Their behavior – both active and passive – serves as a model for their players, and contributes strongly to the pattern of behaviors adopted by their players.

If entrusted with a team by BYBA, I commit that:

?I will follow BYBA’s Code of Conduct regarding acceptable behavior at games and

practices.

?I will put the well being of all my players, including their Health and Safety, ahead of

myown competitive zeal.

?I will follow BYBA’s grade-specific guidelines for playing time.

?I will use my authority to actively teach my players discipline and behavior, consistent

with BYBA expectations.

?I will work to continuously improve my understanding of the game, and my ability to

communicate this knowledge to my team.

?When a player must be singled out for discipline, I will communicate my reasons to . the player and their parents/legal guardians.

I will teach and set an example of competition marked by sportsmanship by:

♦Not berating the officials, nor “talking trash” with opposing coaches.

♦Not using profanity.

♦Demonstrating positive support for all players, including players on other teams, at

everygame.

♦Not letting race, gender, nor creed be a basis of my decision making or behavior.

♦Promoting an alcohol-free and drug-free sports environment.

I will accept the responsibilities incumbent in a head coaching position, and protect the

reputation and ethics of BYBA by reporting any observed violations of the Code of

Conduct promptly to the Travel League Director. I will consider all these expectations in the selection of any assistants and staff. Finally, I understand that a violation of these behavioral expectations byme or myassistants can lead to the violator losing their position as a BYBA coach.
