Air and Rail Travel

Lancaster can be reached by rail from all the major airports in the UK. There are rail links between Lancaster and London, Birmingham, Leeds, Manchester, Oxford, Liverpool, Glasgow and Edinburgh, as well as many other cities. Details of how to get to Lancaster from a selection of major airports are given below, as well as current train times. However, always check National Rail’s online Timetable for up-to-date times

  • ManchesterAirport – There are direct trains from ManchesterAirport to Lancaster (currently at 27 minutes past the hour) and trains via Preston (at 46 mins past the hour). These are the same trains that run from Manchester Piccadilly – direct (currently at 45 mins past the hour) and via Preston (at 12 mins past the hour)
  • LiverpoolJohnLennonAirport – There is a bus service between the airport and Liverpool Lime Street train station in the centre of Liverpool. The bus (500 – Arriva) runs every 20 minutes (at 10, 30, and 50 mins past the hour) until 18.00. After 18.00 and at weekends, the bus runs every 30 minutes (00 and 30 mins past the hour). Journey time is approx. 45 minutes For the Airport to Railway Station Bus:
  • Liverpool Lime Street – Trains from Liverpool to Lancaster travel via Wigan North Western (currently at 05 mins past the hour) and via Warrington Central and Warrington Bank Quay (currently at 22 mins past the hour)
  • HeathrowAirport – The Heathrow Express train departs from HeathrowAirport for London Paddington Station every 15 minutes. £14.50 single ticket, £27.00 return ticket. Journey time is approx. 45 minutes From Paddington, take the London Underground to Euston Station, from where there is a direct train to Lancaster

On Arrival at Lancaster Station

There are very good local bus links between the city/railway station and the university (numbers 2A, X2, 3, 3A and 4 all go to the university). A single ticket is currently £1.10 and a return is currently £1.70. The bus stop (Common Market Street Bus Stop) for the university is a short 5 minute walk from the railway station.
Alternatively, taxi services are available from the rail and bus stations. Fare from the train station to campus are approx. £7

Travelling by Car

LancasterUniversity is situated just off the M6 motorway. Leave the motorway at Junction 33 and take the A6 North towards Lancaster.
For LancasterUniversity main campus, turn right at the third set of traffic lights on the A6 into the University main drive. Take the first exit left from the roundabout at the top of the main drive, then the first avenue on your right. This brings you to the Reception Lodge where security staff will direct you to your destination on campus
