Association of State Floodplain Managers

Ms.Kait Laufenberg joined the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM) in 2008 as ASFPM’s Training and Chapter Coordinator. ASFPM is a national membership organization for floodplain management professionals and is the national certifying agency for the floodplain management profession, home of the Certified Floodplain Manager (CFM) certification.In this position, she manages and coordinates ASFPM’s national training initiatives and new course development and deployment. Ms. Laufenberg works closely with ASFPM chapters, committees,and board leaders, as well as with State and Federal agencies on training initiatives.She is the main point of contact for ASFPM’s 30State chapters, State floodplain managers,and State hazard mitigation officers in all 50States. Additionally, Ms. Laufenberg authors ASFPM’s bi-monthly chapter newsletter; facilitates bi-monthly chapter conference calls;keeps States and chapters informed on policy and training initiatives through regular e-mail alerts; oversees training coordination for ASFPM’s national conference; and supports chapters on business administration and volunteer management issues.

Prior to coming to ASFPM, Ms. Laufenberg worked as a human resources consultant. She has more than12 years of professional experience within the corporate, human resources, and social services sector designing, delivering, and managing training programs. Ms. Laufenberg worked for 4 years at Twin Cities RISE!, a welfare-to-work program that specializes in assisting former offenders, addicts, and adults with multiple barriers to employment to obtain living wage jobs with benefits and advancement potential. While there, she developed, taught, and oversaw the agency’s employment curriculum which she built from the ground up. Ms. Laufenberg facilitated Empowerment soft-skills training for both the internal program and external corporate clients. Twin Cities RISE! graduates have an 85-percent retention rate after 1 year on the job.

Ms. Laufenberg enjoys working with diverse audiences and has experience teaching both hard and soft-skill topics. She has worked with various age groups and settings from corporate training to experiential learning in a summer camp environment. She has extensive training experience teaching audiences with language barriers requiring in-class delayed interpretation as well as physical and developmental disabilities in mixed classroom settings where both employees and supervisors are active participants.

Ms. Laufenberg received her B.A. in sociology from the University of Minnesota. She is a CFM through the ASFPM; has completed five of six courses toward the Master Trainer credential through the Federal Emergency Management Agency; is a Certified Empowerment Instructor through Twin Cities RISE!;and holds a Certified Employee Benefits Specialist I and II credential from the Wharton School of Business. Ms. Laufenberg is a current member of the American Society of Training and Development, the ASFPM, and is a former member of the Society for Human Resources Management.
