Trainees’Newsletter 5–Winter 2016

It was great to see so many trainees at the Winter Meeting (7-8th January, Guoman Tower Hotel, London). We hope that this was a useful and inspiring meeting. The 2017 Winter Meeting is being planned as you read and more information will be available on the website shortly:

Nottingham 2016

The 9th Joint Meeting of the British Division of the IAP and the Pathological Society will be held this summer in Nottingham from Tuesday 28th June to Friday 1st July. The programincludes four trainee-orientated sessions including a symposium on 'The Pathologist in the MDT’, a slide seminar competition and ‘Meet the Experts’sessions on Dermatopathology and Sessile Serrated GI lesions. This meeting is also an excellent opportunity to present your work (audits, research, interesting cases) at an international conference, the abstract submission deadline is Wednesday 9th March and there are a number of bursaries available from the Society to help fund trainees presenting their work at the meeting ( Otherwise, the deadline for early birdregistrationis Monday 23rd May.

Following on from the last two successful meetings, Nottingham will also be hosting the 3rd National Academic Trainee Network Meeting on the 26th and 27th June. This meeting, aimed at academic trainees, is funded by the Society and includes dinner and overnight accommodation on the Sunday 26th June and a full day of lectures and workshops on the Monday 27th June. The theme of this meeting is “Inspiring the Next Generation”. If you have not previously attended and would be interested in attending, please send a 1 page CV to by Monday 7th March.

Recruiting NEW members to the Trainees’Sub-committee

We will be looking to recruit FOUR new members to the Trainees’Sub-committee at the Summer Meeting AGM. If you are interested then please contact me for more information ().

Sub-committee members serve for three years. We meet twice a year and members also sit on one of the other society sub-committees (education, research, meetings, etc) to ensure that the trainees’view is considered in all aspects of the Society’s activity. We try to meet in person for our own sub-committee meetings (usually in London) and other meetings are held via teleconference.

Case report prize–NOW LIVE

Running for the second year – the case report prize deadline is the 24th March 2016.This is open to trainees and undergraduates and the prize includes the opportunity to present the winning cases at the Society’s Scientific Meeting.

To enter – submit a case report or series involving an element of molecular diagnostics of a standard suitable for publication. Judges will select both an undergraduate and trainee winner, who will both be awarded £100 and an opportunity to present their case in poster format at this summer’s meeting in Nottingham (free registration provided). Reports should not exceed 1200 words and applicants are asked to submit their reports . For further details see the website:

Money, money, money…

The Society actively encourages trainees to undertake research and educational activities through the various grant schemes. There has been a recent overhaul in the research small grant schemes –so keep an eye on the website for more details. Go to the Society home page ( and hover over the Grants, Lectures and Awards tab at the top right hand side of the page to see all the available grant options. Below are some of the grants with approaching deadlines of the 1st April 2016:

  • The education grant scheme – this provides up to £5000 funding to support a range of activities associated with undergraduate and postgraduate pathology education
  • The small grant scheme – this provides up to £10,000 for trainees to undertake a small research project.
  • The career development fellowship – this provides two years of flexible funding for consumables and research technician wages to trainees with a track record of excellence in research.
  • The visiting fellowship – this provides up to £5000 to enable you to travel to another institution to learn new techniques in molecular and cellular biology.
  • The equipment grant – this provides up to £10,000 for the purchase of equipment that enables pathologists to engage in research.

The Public Engagement Scheme also offers up to £3000 to support activities relating to promoting public awareness and understanding of pathology. There are four deadlines throughout the year and the next one is 1st March.
