General Description:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of landscaping tasks involving planting and maintaining grass, trees, shrubs, flowers and bulbs on public property including parks and fields.
Distinguishing Characteristics: This class represents the full performance working level and is distinguished from Custodian and Maintenance Worker by its specialized work in maintaining the landscaping of grounds, parks and the cemetery.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
The duties listed below are examples of work typically performed by an employee in this class. An employee may not be assigned all duties listed and may be assigned duties that are not listed below.
  1. Plants seeds, trees, shrubs, bulbs and flowers; lays sod; installs rocks or boulders.
  2. Carries out the seeding, fertilizing, mulching, soil conditioning, thatching, top dressing, watering, weeding and pest control of public grounds, parks, recreational fields and all Town premises.
  3. Mows grass, cuts weeds, trims vegetation, rakes leaves, prunes trees and shrubs and digs up bulbs.
  4. Trims or cuts dead, diseased or overgrown trees, shrubs and bushes from public areas.
  5. Maintains and adjusts grounds and turf care tools and equipment such as mowers, spreaders, tractors, sprinklers, drip and irrigation lines; sharpens lawn mower blades and replaces trimmer reels.
  6. Drags and maintains ball fields in safe playing condition.
  7. Collects and disposes of debris, litter and animal waste from public grounds, fields, walkways, parks, and all Town and adjoining premises.
  8. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Education and Experience Requirements:
Any combination of training, education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and abilities. A typical way to gain the required knowledge and ability is:
Completion of a high school education or possession of a GED and one year of specialized training or experience working with lawn, tree and plant care.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Requirements:
Knowledge of:
  • Equipment, materials and supplies used for grounds maintenance;
  • Basic horticulture principles such as what types of plants grow in certain environments;
  • Effective pruning techniques;
  • Irrigation/sprinkler system operation and maintenance;
  • Tools, hand and power;
  • Planting techniques;
  • Procedures for the safe handling and application of herbicides and pesticides.
Ability to:
  • Understand, follow and transmit written and oral instructions;
  • Write understandable reports concerning daily activities;
  • Read and write in English;
  • Take accurate measurements;
  • Use equipment and tool properly and safely;
  • Recognize common conditions or diseases of plants, trees and shrubs;
  • Apply herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers and other chemical substances without causing injury to citizens, animals or the vegetation;
  • Work independently;
  • Meet deadlines;
  • Communicate courteously and effectively with superiors, co-workers and members of the general public.
Special Requirements:Possession of a valid Nevada driver’s license is required at time of appointment.
Physical Demands:
The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Strength and stamina to stand, sit, walk for long periods of time; stamina and flexibility to stoop, squat, bend, kneel, crouch and crawl; to bend, reach, stretch, climb and balance; strength, dexterity and stamina to use hands and arms to reach, handle, feel, grasp and open containers, and to operate hand and power tools, controls, and related objects; employee frequently needs to be in contact with the ground in a sitting or kneeling position and frequently needs to immerse hands in soil; ability to periodically work in confined spaces; frequent moving or lifting of objects weighing up to 75 pounds and occasionally moving objects weighing up to 100 pounds; specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus; exposure to machinery that produces high decibel levels.

Working Conditions:
Work is performed under the following conditions:
Most of the work is performed outside with exposure to extremes of weather conditions such as heat, cold, dampness, wind, dust, dirt, airborne particles and fumes. Position is also exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals such as herbicides and pesticides. Employee regularly works with or near machinery such as lawn mowers and chain saws and therefore is exposed to vibrations and sometimes prolonged loud noises.
