JUNE 2013 NEWSLETTER

Hello and welcome to my June Newsletter. I trust you all had an enjoyable half term break and like me, are looking forward to an enjoyable summer term.
Primary Athletics
Some of the Year 5 and 6 children will have the opportunity to take part in the Sheffield Schools Athletics Heats on 6th June (12.30-4.30pm). Letters have been sent out to the children involved and of course we wish them well. The finals take place on 20th June at Don Valley for any children who qualify.
Fathers’ Day Lunch
We are looking forward to welcoming dads, grandpas and uncles to school on 21st June. Unfortunately, we cannot accept any more reply slips after Friday 7th June as the food delivery order will have been processed.
Sky Dive
The days are going by pretty quickly until my forthcoming skydive on 16th June. I have to admit that I’m getting quite nervous about it, but there’s definitely no backing out now! Thank you to everyone for the amazing sponsorship and I will definitely be posting photographs after the event. Wish me luck!

PTA
The big PTA event this month is the Summer Fun Day on Saturday 22nd June. If past years are anything to go by this has been a great event and I look forward to seeing everyone on the day. I am aware that the PTA is still short of volunteers on the day so if you can spare a couple of hours on 22nd June please do get in touch.
SEN Reviews
The summer reviews are scheduled for 27th and 28th June. Mrs Wileman will be sending out invitations shortly.
Y4 Kingswood Residential
After some confusion the Year 4 residential to Kingswood will take place next academic year. The residential will take place on the weekend of 9th-11th May 2014.
Class Photos
An order envelope will be sent home with your child this week. You can order on line but orders made through school must be back no later than Wednesday 12 June. The proof photograph is available to view in your child’s classroom.
Sporting Events
There are a few sporting events to look forward to this month. As well as the Primary Athletics we have the Lant Trophy on Monday 10th June at 2.00pm. This year FC Main and Hillfoot Albion will contest the final and you are more than welcome to come and support the teams. Other football events include the Y6 boys’ competition at King Ecgbert on 11th June (4.00pm) and the Y5 competition at the same venue on 12th June. The Y5/6 girls’ event will take place on 13th June, also at KES.
The Year 5 children will be taking part in a couple of competitions at Abbeydale Sports Club. They will take part in the Sheffield School Cricket Competition on 11th June and then Westbourne Cricket and Rounders afternoon on 20th June.
Sports Day
Our annual Sports Day is scheduled for the afternoon of 24th June (1.30pm) on the school field. The format will be similar to last year with all the children having the opportunity to compete in all events. We look forward to seeing you there.
Y6 Transition
King Ecgbert will be holding an informal coffee morning for our Y6 parents to give information about the transition to Y7. This will be held in our dining room at 9.00am on Monday 10th June.
Year 4 Trip to Cadbury World
The Year 4 children will be visiting Cadbury World in Birmingham as part of their topic on Chocolate. The trip will take place on 13th June and promises to be another great event.
Art Gallery
The children have been busy sketching, shading and painting their masterpieces for the forthcoming Art Gallery. You are invited to school on Friday 21 June to view the artwork and have the opportunity to purchase a framed copy of your child’s work. KS1 parents are welcome to view between 1.30 – 2.00 pm and KS2 parents between 2.15 – 3.00 pm.
Y1 Phonics Test
The Y1 children will be taking the National Statutory Reading Test this month. Mrs Finney and Mrs Holmes will make the tests as informal as possible and last year many of the children didn’t even realise they were taking it. All Year 1 children and any children who didn’t achieve a pass score last year have to take the test which tests their phonological understanding.
FS2 and KS1 Visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park
Letters have gone out already for the visit to the Sculpture park on 4th June. This promises to be an excellent event for the children.
Community Events
Please see below for some forthcoming activities at Totley Rise Methodist Church.
Messy Church is on 8th June 3pm - 5pm which is crafts, games and music based around a bible message for all the family. A meal is included. Little Lights sessions for pre-school aged children and their carers will also be starting on Wednesday afternoons (1.30-2.15pm) for play, music, bible story, craft and snacks. Please contact Rachel Wilson on 07912 352543 for further details.
It promises to be a busy month full of exciting opportunities and experiences for the children. Please see the diary sheet for details of new events organised since the last newsletter.
